1,But you shall only know my secretafter I am dead, when there will be no one whom you will have to answer; youshall only know it if that which is now shaking my limbs with cold and withheat should really prove, for me, the end.

2,I am going to tell you my wholelife, the life which did not really begin until the day I first saw you.

3,The idea of so many books arouseda kind of unearthly veneration.

4,I, a girl of thirteen, comingunder the spell of your attraction, grasped this secret of your existence, thisprofound cleavage of your two lives, at the first glance.

5,Here was a man whom everyonespoke of with respect because he wrote books, and because he was famous in thegreat world. Of a sudden he had revealed himself to me as a boyish, cheerfulyoung man of five-and-twenty!

6,You looked at me with a cordial, gracious, all-embracing glance, which was almost a caress. You smiled at metenderly—yes, tenderly, is the word—and said gently, nay, confidentially:“Thanks so much.”

7,I was ever near you, and evertense; but you were no more aware of it than you were aware of the tension ofthe mainspring of the watch in your pocket, faithfully recording the hours foryou, accompanying your footsteps with its unheard ticking, and vouchsafed onlya hasty glance for one second among millions.

8,On this last day I suddenly madeup my mind that I could not live without being near you. You were all the worldto me.

9,But you would not laugh if youcould realise how I stood there on the chilly landing, rigid with apprehension, and yet drawn onward by an irresistible force; how my arm seemed to lift itselfin spite of me.

10,I did not wish to be happy, I didnot wish to live content away from you; so I buried myself in a gloomy world ofself torment and solitude. I would not wear the new and gay dresses they boughtfor me. I refused to go to concerts or to the theatre, and I would not takepart in cheerful excursions. I rarely left the house.

11,This was the first of suchdisappointments: the first time I had to endure what has always been my fate;that you have never recognised me.

12,Can I make you understand howmuch it meant to me that my five years of expectation were so perfectlyfulfilled?

13,We had arranged to meet on asecond evening. Again it was full of wonder and delight. You gave me a thirdnight.

14,My boy who died yesterday wasyours too. He was your son, the child of one of those three nights. I wasyours, and yours only from that time until the hour of his birth.

15,And yet, I must say it, yourkindliness works sluggishly. You need to be asked. You help those who call forhelp; you help from shame, from weakness, and not from sheer joy in helping.

16,Since my first awakening towomanhood, what had my life been but waiting, a waiting upon your will?

17,You were waiting for me in thelobby, and your face lighted up when I came. With a smile on your lips, youhastened to meet me. It was plain that you did not recognise me, neither thechild, nor the girl of old days. Again, to you, I was a new acquaintance.

18,Only when I am dead will thisheritage come to you from one who has loved you more fondly than any other hasloved you, from one whom you have never recognised, from one who has alwaysbeen awaiting your summons and whom You have never summoned.

19,Something welled up within him;and the thought of the dead woman stirred in his mind, bodiless and passionate, like the sound of distant music.
