An older friend once gave me a piece of advice, "Enjoy the last few weeks of college, "she said, "since college is the best time of your life."

This was not the first time I'd heard such a statement, but with graduation fast coming close, her words especially struck me. It seemed a bit disappointing to reach one's life peak at only 22 years of age, but in her opinion, college had been one of the best times in my life so far. I made friends, took classes, and learned a great deal about myself. But I was also excited for the time after college—moving to a new city, starting a new job, and becoming a "real" person. I hoped that my great dreams were practical.

Then, last week I read a column in Real Simple Magazine called 100 Years of Attitude, in which women 100 years or older shared their life experiences and views. I noticed that none of them considered college as the "best" time of their life. Not all of them went to college, but still in most cases their teens and twenties were not the best times of their life. They said some of their favorite times were raising their children, traveling after retirement, and even enjoying their present time and age.

Enjoying one's present time and age was a clear theme of the interviews. A piece of advice given by the women was about the importance of making the best of all situations. I think it more accurate than that of my friend; I can say with certainty that if I am lucky enough to make it to 100. I refuse to spend the last 80 years of my life plummeting (跌落) downhill, or even leveling off.

I am sure that our eagerness and devotion will make us college students live a meaningful life. We will not just look backwards or miss our college days. We will look forward in excitement about continued journey uphill.

56. Which of the following opinions does the writer agree with?

A. College is the best time of one's life.

B. Twenties were the best time of the old people.

C. One should make the best of all situations.

D. One should not look backwards at their college time.

57. In the second paragraph, the writer wants to say ______.

A. her achievements in college would be the peak of her success

B. she is looking forward to living as a “real” person in college

C. she becomes more and more uneasy with graduation

D. she is satisfied with the college life but is hopeful for the future

58. The column the writer read is mainly about those old women’s ______.

A. best time of life at youth                            B. life experiences and views

C. different opinions about life                            D. favorite time with best friends

59. By saying “I refuse to spend the last 80 years of my life plummeting downhill, or even

leveling off” (in Paragraph 4), the writer really means ______.

A. she will not spend the rest of her time at college

B. she will not just obtain a college level certificate

C. she will not be satisfied with what she has already accomplished

D. She will not be content with the life in the future

60. Which of the following words can be used to describe the writer?

A. Ambitious.                 B. Practical.                 C. Imaginative.                 D. Proud.

The iPhone, the iPad, each of Apple’s products sounds cool and has become a fad (一时的风尚). Apple has cleverly taken advantage of the power of the letter “i” — and many other brands are following suit. The BBC’s iPlayer — which allows Web users to watch TV programs on the Internet — adopted the title in 2008. A lovely bear — popular in the US and UK — that plays music and video is called “iTeddy”. A slimmed-down version of London’s Independent newspaper was launched last week under the name “i”.

In general, single-letter prefixes have been popular since the 1990s, when terms such as e-mail and e-commerce first came into use.

Most “i” products are targeted at young people and considering the major readers of Independent’s “i”, it’s no surprise that they’ve selected this fashionable name.

But it’s hard to see what’s so special about the letter “i”. Why not use “a”, “b”, or “c” instead? According to Tony Thorne, head of the Language Center at King’s College, London, “i” works because its meaning has become ambiguous. When Apple uses “i”, no one knows whether it means Internet, information, individual or interactive, Thorne told BBC Magazines. “Even when Apple created the iPod, it seems it didn’t have one clear definition,” he says.

“However, thanks to Apple, the term is now associated with portability (轻便) .”adds Thorne.

Clearly the letter “i” also agrees with the idea that the Western World is centered on the individual. Each person believes they have their own needs, and we love personalized products for this reason.

Along with “Google” and “blog”, readers of BBC Magazines voted “i” as one of the top 20 words that have come to define the last decade.

But as history shows, people grow tired of fads. From the 1900s to 1990s, products with “2000” in their names became fashionable as the year was associated with all things advanced and modern. However, as we entered the new century, the trend inevitably disappeared.

66. People use iPlayer to ______.

A. listen to music                                                                                          B. make a call

C. watch TV programs online                                                D. read newspapers

67. We can infer that the Independent’s “i” is aimed at ______.

A. young readers               B. old readers               C. fashionable women              D. engineers

68. The underlined word “ambiguous” means “______”.

A. popular     B. uncertain                  C. definite                   D. unique

69. Nowadays, the “i” term often reminds people of the products which are ______.

A. portable                                                                       B. environmentally friendly

C. advanced                                                            D. recyclable

70. The writer suggests that ______.

A. “i” products are often of high quality

B. iTeddy is a live bear

C. the letter “b” replaces letter “i” to name the products

D. the popularity of “i” products may not last long

阅读下面短文,从每题所给的A, B, C, D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。

We keep reading that TV is bad for you. If this is true, how come the current generation of TV-addicted kids is much smarter than we are? In my home, the only people who can work the remote control are the children.

Perhaps TV does educate you. For example, you learn a useful medical fact: A person who has been shot always has time to speak an incomplete sentence before he dies. “The killer was…” (dies)

But I guess the biggest things we learn from TV can be regarded as “Life Skills”. Bad things only happen on dark and stormy nights. Emotional breakdowns cause people to wander in the heavy rain without umbrellas. And contrary to what scientists say, the crack (霹雳) of lightning and the accompanying flash happen at exactly the same time, wherever you are.

I’ve even acquired useful geographical facts from science-fiction shows: Aliens speak English no matter which planet they come from.

Making use of what we learn from TV can improve our security. Consider these truths. If you are ever attacked by 20 bad guys, don’t worry about being outnumbered. The criminals will hang back and take turns to approach you in ones and twos just so you can conveniently defeat them all. Bad guys who are completely covered in black clothes always remove their black masks to reveal that they are in fact, aha, women.

TV also teaches us important information about escaping from danger. Watch and learn. (1) If anyone is running after you down a passage, you will find that boxes have been conveniently placed near all the walls you need to jump over. (2) If you are tall and handsome, you can run from any number of armed criminals, and every shot will miss you.

Be warned, however. If your name card says “henchman” (帮凶) and you are part of a group of plain-looking people trying to catch a handsome individual, a single shot will kill you. But don’t be anxious: TV also delivers useful information for bad guys. All cars are inflammable (易燃的) and have amazing shock absorbers that enable them to fly into the air and land without damage — except police cars.

TV even teaches us about TV. Whenever anyone turns on a TV, it shows a news flash about someone they know. They then turn the box off immediately after that news item.

71. By saying “A person who has been shot always has time to speak an incomplete sentence before he dies” (Paragraph 2), the writer shows his ______.

A. humor                            B. medical knowledge               C. deep concern               D. sympathy

72. We can learn from Paragraph 3 that in the real world ______.

A. bad things cause people to break down in the rain

B. bad things never happen on dark and stormy nights

C. people with emotional problems like to walk in the rain without umbrellas

D. the crack of lightning and the accompanying flash don’t happen at the same time

73. On TV what usually happens when a person turns it on?

A. The news shown is always about someone the person knows.

B. The person always turns off the TV when it’s time for news.

C. The program shown is always about the importance of TV.

D. TV always shows news about famous people.

74. What’s the main idea of this passage?

A. Life skills can be learned from TV.

B. TV plays an important role in society.

C. Watching TV makes people more creative.

D. What happens in TV is very different from reality.

75. The writer of this passage takes a(n) ______ attitude towards TV plays.

阅读下面短文,请根据文后的要求进行答题。(请注意问题后的字数要求)

Doctors say anger can be an extremely damaging, unless you learn how to deal with it. They warn that anger can lead to heart disease, stomach problems, headaches, emotional problems and possibly cancer.

Anger is a normal emotion that we all feel from time to time. Some people express anger openly in a calm reasonable way. Others burst with anger, and scream and yell. But other people keep their anger inside. They can not or will not express it. This is called ______________.

For years many doctors thought that repressing anger was more dangerous to a person’s health than expressing it. They said that when a person is angry, the brain release the same hormones. They speed the heart rate, raise blood pressure, or sugar into the blood, etc. In general the person feels excited and ready to act.

Some doctors say that both repressing and expressing anger can be dangerous. They believe that those who express anger violently may be likely to develop heart disease, and they believe that those who keep their anger inside may face a greater danger of high blood pressure.

Doctors say the solution is learning how to deal with anger. They say the first step is to admit that you are angry and to recognize the real cause of the anger, then decide if the cause is serious enough to get angry about. If it is, they say, “Do not express your anger while angry. Wait until your anger has cooled down and you are able to express yourself calmly and reasonably. ”

Doctors say that a good way to deal with anger is to find humor in the situation that has made you angry. They said that laughter is much healthier than anger.

Dear Mr. Jackson,

I am really sorry about my using the mobile phone in your lecture last week. Please accept my heart-felt apology for being so rude a student.

I know any word might sound a make-up excuse. But i didn’t use my mobile phone for no reason. I was trying to find a part-time job last week and that day, I got a job offer and they needed my further information immediately. Therefore, I got no choice but try sending them a text message in class and that was exactly what I was doing when you discovered.

Anyway, using a mobile phone in a classroom was not acceptable to any teacher. I swear it will not happen again. But I do need my phone back to keep in touch with others.

Will you be so kind as to give it back to me. Thanks a million!

Best wish!
