Word spread that the long, lonely voyage of the Japanese ghost ship came to an end.

A US Coast Guard cutter(小快艇) poured cannon fire into an abandoned Japanese ghost ship that had been drifting since last year’s tsunami, sinking the vessel into deep waters of the Gulf of Alaska and removing the danger it posed to shipping and the coastline on Thursday.

The cutter’s guns tore holes in the 164-foot Ryou-Un Maru, and then it began to take on water and lean to one side. Within about four hours, the ship disappeared into the sea.

The tank of the ship was able to carry more than 7,570 liters of diesel fuel(柴油), though no one knew exactly how much fuel was aboard.

“It’s less risky than it would be running into shore or running into other ships,” coast guard spokesman Paul Webb said. In other words, it is safer to sink the ship than let the fuel evaporate(挥发) and pollute the sea environment.

Ryou-Un Maru was probably among the first wave of the 1.5 million tons of garbage of refrigerators, washing machines, televisions, roofs and fishing nets heading toward North America since last March when a magnitude-9.0 earthquake struck Japan.

In fact, a Canadian fishing vessel, the 19-meter Bernice C, claimed the rights to save the ghost ship in international waters when the coast guard was said to be ready to fire on the ship Ryou-Un Maru. Thus, plans to sink it were paused so the Canadian crew could have a chance to take the stricken ship. But later, A Canadian official told the Associated Press that Bernice C was unable to drag it.

Then the Canadian boat left before the Coast Guard began to fire, first with 25 mm shells(炮蛋), then a few hours later with ammunition (弹药)twice that size.

56. The plan to fire on the Japanese ghost ship was paused because ____________.

   A. the ghost ship was beyond the reach of the Coast Guard’s guns

   B. state officials worried the ghost ship might give out radiation

   C. the shells were not powerful enough to sink the ghost ship

D. a Canadian fishing boat wanted to save the ghost ship

57. What’s the right order of the events related to the ship of Ryou-Un Maru?

                              a. Its long, lonely voyage came to an end.

b. The US Coast Guard sank it into the sea.

c. The ship began to float across the Pacific Ocean.

d. A big tsunami was caused by great earthquakes.

e. Bernice C claimed rights to save the ghost ship.

B. a→b→d→c→e

C. d→c→e→b→a

D. b→a→d→c→e

58. Which of the following could be the best title for the passage?

A. Cannon fire sinking Japanese ghost ship

B. Japanese ghost ship polluting the Pacific

C. Tsunami caused amounts of garbage in the sea

D. Japanese ghost ship got lost on its long voyage

Café en Seine

The wildly luxury(奢华) new art style of this huge bar has been a massive hit since it first opened in 1995, and while it may not be the “in” place it once was, it is still very popular with the after-work crowd and out-of-towners. Long long ago, there was a scholar who always wanted to gain more knowledge each day even though he had already gained enough knowledge. One day, he came to visit a saint(圣人) and asked to be his student. The saint offered some tea. He slowly filled the scholar’s cup: the cup was full, yet he kept pouring. The scholar couldn’t help bursting out, “Stop! You can’t add anything to something that’s already full!” The saint set down the teapot and replied, “Exactly.”

Whether it’s the silence between notes in music, or some open time in your schedule, you need space to act effectively. Yet most of us, myself included, tend to stuff as much as possible into whatever room is available - closets, schedules, budgets, relationships, and even the mind itself.

However, some people know how to avoid overstuffing their life. For example, in Australia, it seemed that most people there operated at about 85% of their capacity, unlike Americans pushing as close as to 100% as possible. So when you run into Australians you know in the street, they have time to hang out and talk with you.

Remember the cup: its value is in the space, the emptiness it holds. How to empty your “cup” ?

Be mindful of the element of space, openness, and emptiness in your life. This includes room in a drawer, the volume of air in a kitchen, and open-mindedness in a friend. Sometimes you’re just stuck with a big bucket of tasks yet to do. But at least empty the bucket faster than you fill it with new tasks. Put some space between finishing one thing and starting another. For example, after sending one email, take a breath before replying to another one. Drop the stuff you can no longer afford to lug around. At sea level, you can run with a brick in your backpack, but if you’re hiking on a mountain, that brick has to go.

63. The saint probably wanted to tell the scholar by pouring water into the cup, that ____.

   A. he should be diligent in order to succeed

   B. he had already gained enough knowledge

C. he ought to pay attention to details

   D. he should keep learning every day

64. We learn that compared to Americans, Australians _____.

   A. spare more time for themselves

   B. know less about their capacity

   C. spend less time with their friends

   D. are easy to overstuff their life

65. The underlined word “lug” in the last paragraph probably means “_____”.

   A. reach                 B. see                               C. show                 D. carry

66. What’s the structure of the passage?

   A. story → advice →example →topic

   B. topic → example → advice → story

   C. story → topic → example → advice

   D. topic →reason→ advice → example

In his earlier books, David Burke, a famous writer, translated the language of American teenagers for an older generation, and explained American idioms for English-language learners overseas. His latest effort targets American children who know little of foreign languages.

He has written a series of books based on the observation that fairy tales are widely known across cultures. “We start in English, and as the reader moves forward, the story starts to change into another language.” (INSTRUCTION CD: “Once upon a time, there lived a poor girl—nvhaizi—named Cinderella(灰姑娘) who was very pretty—piaoliang. The nvhaizi, who was very piaoliang….”)

Burke has published books of fairy tales with CDs in Mandarin Chinese, French, Italian, German, Hebrew, Japanese and Spanish. A separate Spanish-language version helps teach English to Lain American youngsters. Young readers learn about 20 words at each level, then move to the next level as they read a different fairy tale. “For example, I’ve taken the story of Goldilocks(金发姑娘), and I bring back all the words the kids have learned in Cinderella, and I add 20 more until the ninth level. By the end of the entire series, it will be 100 percent in the target language.” Burke says students often think of language learning as dull, but it doesn’t have to be. He designed his books with color1ful cartoon-like illustrations(插图) that attract the young readers.

He says many people in other parts of the world often speak at least two languages. Americans have a different reputation. “It’s a joke in the linguistic(语言学的) world that’s painful, and funny. It’s, What do you call a person who speaks three languages? Trilingual.  And what do you call a person who speaks two languages? Bilingual. And what do you call a person who speaks one language? American.” Not all Americans are monolingual, of course, but too many Americans are fluent only in English, and he is working to change that.

72.   Burke’s series of books are intended for ____________knowing little foreign language.

A.      older generation

B.       teenagers in Spain

C.       Chinese readers

D.      American children

73.   What does “monolingual” in last paragraph mean according to the passage?

A. Using one language.

B. Using two languages.

C. Using three languages.

D. Using none of the languages.

74. Which is NOT TRUE about the series of fairy tales?

   A. Readers will learn 20 new words or so at every level.

  B. There are ninth levels in all about the fairy tales.

   C. Only Spanish-language version has CDs with it.

   D. The books are attractive with cartoon-like illustrations

75. The best title for the passage may be ______________.
