Mum, what does it mean when someone tells you that they have a skeleton (骨骼) in the closet (衣橱)? Jessica asked. A skeleton in the closet? her mother paused thoughtfully.Well, it's something that you would rather not have anyone else know about. For example, if in the past, someone in Dad's family had been arrested for stealing a horse, it would be a skeleton in his family's closet. He really wouldn't want any neighbor to know about it.”

Why pick on my family? Jessica's father said with anger. Your family history isn't so good, you know. Wasn't your great-great-grandfather a prisoner who was transported to Australia for his crimes? Many people like the feeling of the gentle wind in spring. Many people like to see the falling leaves dancing in the wind in autumn .But sometimes, when the wind becomes a storm, it can be very destructive(毁灭性的).

A series of such storms struck the US last month and caused very serious damage. Every year, major storms cause many problems around the world. There is nothing people can do to stop these powerful forces of nature. But new techniques are helping scientists to predict(预测) how, when, and where big storms will happen. The more exact scientists’ warnings are, the better people can prepare for the storms.

Predictions are improving. “We’ve gotten better over the years, especially the last few years,” says Phil Klotzbach, a scientist at an American university. How is a storm formed? Even if scientists know where a storm will happen, winds can suddenly change, carrying the storm to a new direction. “For a hurricane to happen, conditions have to be just right,” Klotzbach says.

Fist, the ocean water needs to be warm enough so that it evaporates and rises into the air. As it rises, the vapor(水蒸气) cool and turns back into liquid. This process(过程) gives off heat. This produces energy like an engine that causes winds to increase. It drives the formation of a hurricane.

If wind speed reaches 40 miles per hour, the system is called a “tropical storm”, and it gets a name. At 75miles per hour, it becomes a hurricane.

Hurricanes that hit the US start when a thunderstorm forms off the coast of Africa. Storms also develop over tropical waters in other parts of the world.

On average, 60 or 70 storms form off Africa every year. About 10 of them get names. There are usually about six hurricanes. Two tend to be very big, with winds of 115 miles per hour or higher.

The hurricane season lasts from June to November. Ninety percent of all hurricanes hit in August, September, and October.

65. The underlined word “evaporates” probably means “     ”.

A. begins to move   B. gets lost    C. becomes hot     D. changes into a gas

a. The ocean water evaporates and goes into the air.

b. Heat creates energy and causes winds to increase.

c. The vapor cools.

d. The ocean water is warm enough.

e. The vapor changes back into liquid.

Tim Richter and his wife, Linda, had taught for over 30 years near Buffalo, New York -- he in computers, she in special education.“Teaching means everything to us,” Tim would say. In April 1998, he learned he would need a heart operation. It was the kind of news that leads to some serious thinking about life's purpose.
Not long after the surgery, Tim saw a brochure describing Imagination Library, a program started by Dolly Parton's foundation (基金会) that mailed a book every month to children from birth to age five in the singer's home town of Sevier, Tennessee. “I thought, maybe Linda and I could do something like this when we retire,” Tim recalls. He placed the brochure on his desk, “as a reminder.”
Five years later, now retired and with that brochure still on the desk, Tim clicked on imagination library.com. The program had been opened up to partners who could take advantage of book and postage discounts.
The quality of the books was of great concern to the Richters. Rather than sign up online, they went to Dollywood for a look-see. “We didn't want to give the children rubbish,” says Linda. The books-reviewed each year by teachers, literacy specialists, and Dollywood board members -- included classics such as Ezra Jack Keats's The Snowy Day and newer books like Anna Dewdney's Llama Llama series.
Satisfied, the couple set up the Richter Family Foundation and got to work. Since 2004, they have shipped more than 12,200 books to preschoolers in their area. Megan Williams, a mother of four, is more than appreciative: “This program introduces us to books I've never heard of.”
The Richters spend about $400 a month sending books to 200 children. “Some people sit there and wait to die,” says Tim. “Others get as busy as they can in the time they have left.”

67. What led Tim to think seriously about the meaning of life?
A. His love for teaching.        B. His health problem.
C. The influence of his wife.    D. The news from the Web.

68. What did Tim want to do after learning about Imagination Library?
A. Give out brochures.           B. Retire from being a teacher.
C. Write books for children      D. Do something similar.

69. According to the text, Dolly Parton is ________.
A. a singer born in Tennessee     B. a mother of a four-year-old
C. a well-known surgeon           D .a computer programmer

70. What can we learn from Tim's words in the last paragraph?

When your pet is sick, you know it needs medication. But pets, like babies, don't know the pill you want them to take will help them.___71____ Here are some tips to help get your pet to take liquid medicine.

____72___If the answer is yes, then your easiest path is to mix it with canned food. First give your hungry pet a small amount of canned food without the medication. It's important that the pet nibbles (一点一点地吃) at the food and sees that there's nothing wrong.

Next, while the pet is still hungry, mix the medication in a small amount food and present it. Repeat as necessary to get the entire dose (剂量) down.____73__ If the pet decides not to finish the meal, the dose will be wasted.

If the chemist says the medication cannot be taken with food, you need a syringe (注射器) or a dropper (滴管) to get the liquid down your pet's throat.

__74___ Keep a cheerful tone in your voice so the pet doesn't sense your stress or hesitation. Position your pet where it cannot run away, perhaps having a dog sit with his back against a wall or chair ---- or a cat on your lap.

____75___ Use your other hand to insert the syringe or dropper between the cheek and back teeth. Slowly squeeze the medication so the pet won't choke. Try to keep your pet's mouth closed for approximately 30 seconds until you see it has swallowed. If your pet is being obstinate (倔强的) , stroke (抚摸) its throat gently or blow on the face.

Be sure you end the session with praise and perhaps a treat so your pet will not associate medication with a bad experience.

A. Before you call your pet in, be sure to have the medication and any other materials you’ll need ready.

B. Once the pet is in position, use one hand to gently open the pet's mouth from above, tilting back the head slightly.

C. Ask the vet(兽医) if the liquid medication can be given with food.

D. You should know the reason why the pet refuses to take medicine.

E. Never mix the medication with the full meal.

F. They just know it smells funny and they don't want it.

G. Don't force your pet to swallow all the medicine.
