For centuries, the body’s blood has been linked closely with the emotions.People who show no human emotions or feelings, are said to be cold-blooded killer. For example, the police are searching for a cold-blooded killer. He seems to kill for no reason, and no emotion, as if taking someone’s life is nothing.

Cold can affect other parts of the body. The expression “get cold feet” has nothing to do with cold or your feet. The expression means being afraid to do something you have decided to do.For example, you agree to be president of an organization. But then you learn that all the other officers have resigned, and all the work of the organization will be your responsibility. You are likely to get cold feet about being president when you understand the situation.

The expression “give someone the cold shoulder” probably comes from the physical act of turning your back toward someone, instead of speaking to him face to face. You may give a cold shoulder to a friend who has not kept a promise he made to you.Or, to someone who has lied about you to others.

A cold fish is not a fish.It is a person. But it is a person who is unfriendly, unemotional and shows no love or warmth.A cold fish does not offer much of himself to anyone.Someone who is a cold fish could be cold-hearted.Now a cold-hearted person is someone who has no sympathy.       Several popular songs in recent years were about cold-hearted men or cold-hearted women who, without feelings, broke the hearts of their lovers.

“Out in the cold” means not getting something that everybody else got.A person might say that everybody but him got a pay raise---he was left out in the cold. And it is not a pleasant place to be.

60.There are _________ expressions related to cold that are mentioned in the passage.

A.3            B.4             C.6             D.7

61.When you refuse to speak to a man and treat him in a distant way, you may express by

“_________”.

A.I give him the cold shoulder           B.I think he is a cold-blooded man

C.I think he is a cold fish               D.I’m likely to get cold feet

62.The topic of this passage is about _________.

At 9:00 Dick Spivak's bank telephoned and said his payment was late. "The check is in the post," Dick replied quickly. At 11:45 Dick left for a 12:00 meeting across town. Arriving late, he explained that traffic had been had. That evening, Dick's girlfriend wore a new dress. He hated it. "It looks just great on you," he said. Three lies in one day! Yet Dick Spivak is just an ordinary man. Each time, he told himself that sometimes the truth causes too many problems.

Most of us tell much the same white lies, harmless untruths that help to save trouble. How often do we tell white lies? It depends in part on our age, education, and even where we live. According to one U.S. study, women are more truthful than men, and honesty increases as we get older. While most people use little white lies to make life easier, the majority of Americans care about honesty in both public and personal life. They say that people today are less honest than they were ten years ago. Although it is believed that things are getting worse, lying seems to be an age-old human problem. The French philosopher Vauvenarges, writing in the eighteenth century, touched on the truth when he wrote, "All men are born truthful and die liars(说谎者)."

63. When the writer says "Dick Spivak is just an ordinary man", he means_____.

  A. it is common that people tell white lies

B. Dick could do nothing about bad traffic

  C. it is common that people delay (推迟) their payment

D. Dick found it had to deal with everyday problems

64. According to the text, most Americans_____.

  A. hate white lies   B. believe white lies  C. value honesty  D. consider others dishonest

  C. people were dishonest in the 18th century              D. it is social conditions that make people tell lies

Dear David,

Thanks for your e-mail. Now I’d to tell you something about my summer vacation.

I finished my homework on time, which I think was the most important. BesidesI did a lot of interesting things. As you know, the 2010 World Cup was held in South Africa. I watched almost all the football matches with my friends and classmates. How about you? I also took raining courses, including maths, physics and chemistry. I once worked for two weeks in a small restaurant near my home, where I washed dishes and vegetables. It was really a tiring job, but I think it was worthwhile since I could earn some money. I think my voluntary workin the nursing home was the most meaningful. I did some cleaning and read newspapers for the elderly there.

What did you do during your summer vacation? Please tell me in your next e-mail.
