Most commuters (乘车上班族) in Munich, Germany, spend hours stuck in traffic or trying to squeeze into one of the overcrowded subway trains every morning, but for 40-year-old Benjamin David, commuting is actually a relaxing experience. Every day, he jumps into the Isar River and swims two kilometers to his workplace in Kulturstrand.

Two years ago Benjamin decided that he needed to find a simpler alternative to make his way to work and the Isar River seemed like the obvious answer. It flows right past his apartment in Baldeplatz, and, even though no one has been using it for traveling purposes in decades, at one point, it was one of the most popular routes between Rome and Vienna. Benjamin decided to swim to work, and that’s been his main commute for the past two years.

Every morning, Benjamin leaves his apartment in Baldeplatz, crosses the street and jumps into the Isar River. He has to swim two kilometers to his office in Kulturstrand, which usually takes him about half an hour. Once there, he dries himself with a towel and waits for his colleagues to get through the heavy traffic, by enjoying a cappuccino at a cafe.

The swimming commuter found the perfect way to keep his things dry while he is in the water—a special bag that is not only waterproof, but also fills up with air when you roll it shut. It’s called a “Wickelfisch” and it was designed by a startup in Basel, Switzerland, where swimming to work has actually become a big trend. It holds Benjamin’s laptop, paperwork and clothes dry, and allows him to simply float down the river if his arms get tired.

Depending on the season and temperature of the water, Benjamin will put on a simple pair of shorts sometimes, but he always wears rubber sandals to protect his feet. People throw all kinds of things in the river, from glass bottles to bicycles, and the sandals provide protection.

25. Which of the following is true according to the passage?

A. Many visitors travel along the Isar River every year.

B. Benjamin David began to swim to work in his twenties.

C. It takes Benjamin about half an hour to swim 2 kilometers.

D. Isar River is one of the best routes between Rome and Vienna.

26. According to Benjamin, a “Wickelfisch” is something that       .

A. is used all year round

B. can be used for him to have a break in the river

C. is used just to help keep his clothes dry in the river

D. can protect his feet from the dangerous rubbish in the water

27. According to the passage, Benjamin may describe his commuting experience as       .

A. relaxing and enjoyable                                                                                                  B. relaxing but dangerous

C. exciting but tiring                                                                                                                D. tiring and dangerous

28. Which of the following do you think is the best title for this passage?

A. A good way to enjoy life                                                                                                  B. Swim to work—a good idea!

C. A new trend to go to work                                                                                                  D. An economical transportation method

We always knew our daughter Kendall was going to be a performer of some sort. She entertained people in our small town by putting on shows on our front porch when she was only three or four. Blonde-haired, blue-eyed, and beautiful, she sang like a little angel and charmed everyone.

When Kendall was five, we began to notice that she was blinking a lot and clearing her throat frequently. After the problem worsened, we took her to our local children’s hospital where she was diagnosed with Tourette’s Syndrome.

It was pretty devastating because other children constantly made fun of her, and sadly, even a teacher teased her. She only had one or two friends, but that was okay because they were—and continue to be—real, the kind who stick by her, no matter what. Through all this, Kendall continued to sing and entertain. Remarkably, her tics (面部痉挛) disappeared when she sang.

We took our daughter from doctor to doctor, but all they did was give her medication that just made it worse, so we decided to go the natural route. Through changes in her diet, and other natural treatments, the tics gradually lessened.

As a parent, you always think your child is the best ever—that’s just what parents do.

When she was a little girl trying hard to be strong, she looked up at me, her big eyes brimming with tears, and asked me why she had to have Tourette’s Syndrome. My heart ached to make the world right for my child. But I looked right back at her and told her the truth as I see it.

“Kendall, God gave you a pure heart, an angelic voice, a strong mind, and a beautiful presence. With all of that, he had to make it fair for everyone else.”

29. When Kendall was a child,       .

Hi, everybody. One of the most urgent challenges of our time is climate change. When I took office, I said this was something we couldn’t kick down the road any longer—that our children’s future depended on our action. So we got to work, and over the past seven-and-a-half years, we’ve made ambitious investments in clean energy, and ambitious reductions in our carbon emissions.

We’ve multiplied wind power threefold. We’ve multiplied solar power more than thirtyfold. In parts of America, these clean power sources are finally cheaper than dirtier, conventional power. And carbon pollution from our energy sector is at its lowest level in 25 years, even as we’re continuing to grow our economy.

We’ve invested in energy efficiency, and we’re reducing carbon emissions from appliances, homes, and businesses. We’re reforming how we manage federal coal resources, which supply roughly 40% of America’s coal. We’ve set the first-ever national standards limiting the amount of carbon pollution power plants can release into the sky. We also set standards to increase the distance our cars and light trucks can go on a gallon of gas every year through 2025. And they’re working. Besides, we’ve seen a boom in the plug-in electric vehicle market—with more models, lower battery costs, and more than 16,000 charging stations.

But we’re not done yet. In the weeks and months ahead, we’ll release a second round of fuel efficiency standards for heavy-duty vehicles. We’ll take steps to meet the goal we set with Canada and Mexico to achieve 50 percent clean power across North America by 2025. And we’ll continue to protect our lands and waters so that our kids and grandkids can enjoy our most beautiful spaces for generations.

And if we keep pushing, and leading the world in the right direction, there’s no doubt that, together, we can leave a better, cleaner, safer future for our children.

Thanks, everybody. Have a great weekend.

Dear Wang Lin,

Learning from your letter that you are upset recently that your parents don’t permit you to watch TV at the weekend and hope you spend all the time on study, I fully understand how you are feeling now. So I’m writing to offer you some advice.

It is really boring to do our homework all day without any relaxation. I know you enjoy watching TV. But right now, we are students. With so much homework to do, if we spend too much time on TV, there will be little time left for our studies. That is why our parents expect us to focus on our lessons. I hope you will have a heart-to-heart talk with your parents, which can help you understand each other better. Maybe they will allow you to watch an English movie every weekend. I think it is important to develop a pleasant relationship with our parents whatever may happen.

I wish you to have a good mood and I am looking forward to your early reply.

Yours sincerely,

Li Hua
