Many cities have subways and underground public transportation to take locals and tourists alike rapidly around the city. However, there’s something different about riding a London subway. It may not look different, but the historical value of one of England’s most popular forms of transportation is enough to make riding the subway a must when visiting London. With a little under 300 different stations, the subway can take you almost anywhere you need to go.

Riding a London subway, a person from other countries will notice one major difference: in London, people do not look at each other. In fact, eye contact is avoided at all times. That’s not rudeness― people are just too busy to bother looking.

Busy doing what, you ask? Well, they’re certainly not using the time for a moment of quiet thinking.Nor are they reading a book.New technology has replaced quiet habits.Today the only acceptable form of book on the London underground is an e-book.

Apple must earn a fortune from London commuters(使用月票上下班者).Since the launch of the iPhone in 2007, over 40,000―yes, that’s 40,000 “apps” have been designed.

Commuters love them because they are the perfect time-killers.One “app”, called iShoot, is a game that features tanks.Another one, Tube Exits, tells passengers where to sit on the train to be closest to the exit of their destination.iSteam clouds the iPhone screen when you breathe into the microphone. You can then write in the “steam” on your phone screen.

For those without an iPhone, another Apple product, the iPod, may be the distraction(消遣)of choice. It’s not just teenagers who “plug in” to their music-iPods are a popular way to pass the time for all ages.

And if games, e-books and music aren’t enough to keep you occupied, then perhaps you would prefer a film? The development of palm DVD technology means many commuters watch their favorite TV shows or films on the way to work. With all these distractions, it’s amazing that people still remember to get off the train.

56. People in London do not make eye contact on the subway because ______.

A. they are going to work and have no time to communicate with each other

B. they love reading books and do not want to be disturbed

C. they feel sleepy because of getting up early

A. programs downloaded for the iPhone     B. computer companies

C. computers                                                        D. fortune from London commuters

59. The main idea of the passage is that ______.

A. London commuters are unfriendly to strangers

B. Apple has earned a lot of money from selling 40,000 apps

C. technology is changing how London commuters spend their traveling time

D. riding a London subway is a must when visiting London

60. Which word best describes the writer’s attitude towards commuters’ behaviors?

Fourteen – year – old Richie Hawley had spent five years studying violin at the Community School of Performing Arts in Los Angeles when he took part in a violin contest. Ninety two young people were invited to the contest and Hawley came out first.

The contest could have been the perfect setup for fear, worrying about mistakes, and trying to impress the judges. But Hawley says he did pretty well in staying calm. “I couldn’t be thinking about how many mistakes I’d make—it would distract me from playing,” he says.“I didn’t even remember trying to impress people while I played. It’s almost as if they weren’t there. I just wanted to make music.”

Hawley is a winner. But he didn’t become a winner by concentrating on winning. He did it by concentrating on playing well.

“The important thing in the Olympic Games is not to win but to take part,” said the founder of the modern Olympics, Pierre de Coubertin.“The important thing in life is not the triumph but the struggle. The essential thing is not to have conquered but to have fought well.”

A characteristic of high performers is their intense, pleasurable concentration on work, rather than on their competitors or future glory or money, says Dr.Charles Garfield, who has studied 1,500 achievers in business, science, sports, the arts, and professions.“They are interested in winning, but they’re most interested in self-development, testing their limits.”

One of the most surprising things about top performers is how many losses they’ve had and how much they’ve learned from each. “Not one of the 1,500 I studied defined losing as failing,” Garfield says.“They kept calling their losses ‘setbacks’.”

A healthy attitude toward setbacks is essential to winning, experts agree.

“The worst thing you can do if you’ve had a setback is to let yourself get stuck in a prolonged depression. You should analyze carefully what went wrong, identify specific things you did right and give yourself credit for them.” Garfield believes that most people don’t give themselves enough praise. He even suggests keeping a diary of all the positive things you’ve done on the way to a goal.

61. Hawley won the contest because _______.

A. he put all his mind to his performance   B. he cared much about the judges’ feelings

C. he worried about making mistakes.      D. he paid close attention to the people around

62. According to the passage, successful people concentrate on _______.

A. defeating their opponents                                          B. learning from others

C. challenging their own limits                                        D. avoiding setbacks

63. High performers is that they tend to give priority to _______.

A. glory                     B. wealth                  C. pleasure                        D. work

64. The passage tells us that “praise” in times of trouble _______.

A. helps people deal with their disappointment    B. makes people forget their setbacks

C. makes people regret about their past          D. helps people realize their goals

65. It can be learned from the passage that top performers are not _______.

A. interested in winning                                 B. free of losses

C. accustomed to failures                             D. concerned about setbacks

Young children whose mothers talk with them more frequently and in more detail about people’s thoughts and feelings tend to be better at taking another person’s perspective(观点)than other children of the same age.

That’s what researchers from the University of Western Australia found in a new study published in the journal Child Development.

“Parents who frequently put themselves in someone else’s shoes in conversations with their children make it more likely that their children will be able to do the same,” said lead author Brad Farrant.

Researchers of the UWA’s Telethon Institute for Child Health Research looked at the influence of how parents interact with their children to learn more about how people develop the ability to take another’s perspective.

The two-year study involved more than 120 Australian children aged between four and six, including children with typically developing language and others delayed in language acquisition(习得).

The children completed tasks which were designed to assess their language skills, ability to infer others’ beliefs and use these to predict others’ behavior, and their ability to shift flexibly between different perspectives.

Among children with typically developing language, the researchers found that mothers who talked more often and in greater detail about people’s thoughts and feelings — commenting on how another person might react to a particular situation as well as their own feelings about the topic — had children with better language skills and better perspective-taking skills.

Children with delayed language acquisition were also delayed in their development of perspective-taking skills. This displays the role played by language as children develop the ability to take another’s perspective.

“Solving the many challenges that the world faces today requires us all to get better at taking the perspective of other people,” said Brad Farrant.

66. Which of the following is TRUE about the study?

A. Over one hundred American children took part in it.

B. All the children had delayed in language acquisition.

C. The children in the study were around five years old.

D. Mothers helped their children to complete the tasks.

67. According to the text, to help children gain better perspective-taking skills, parents should __________.

A. give their children more chances to express themselves

B. talk more with their children about people’s feelings

C. encourage their children to guess other people’s thoughts

D. spend more time playing with their children

68. In the last paragraph, Brad Farrant __________.

A. stressed the importance of perspective-taking skills

B. expressed his concern about the world’s challenges

C. showed how to take the perspective of other people

D. explained why other people’s opinions are important

69. According to the text, we can learn __________.

A. parents should talk to their children frequently no matter how old their children are

B. it was Brad Farrant who wrote the study in Child Development herself

C. the only way to improve language skill is talking to children more often

D. parents who are always thinking about others will help their children do the same way

70. Which have an effect on the development of children’s perspective-taking skills?

A. The surrounding environments.              B. Mother’s perspectives.

C. Personal characters.                  D. Language skills.

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

Allen: I’ve never been a big fan of the bears, especially the vacation show. On my last trip to Disneyland (1999) we passed it by, because we didn’t want to spend the time on something we didn’t really enjoy. If we’d known it would be closed by our next visit. I’m sure we would have watched it one more time. I was just making the point that it wasn’t until Disney announced the closing that this feeling suddenly sprang (弹跳) up for the Country Bear show at Disneyland.

But I think the idea of keeping some attractions open forever regardless of the number of visitors it gets is a mistake. We all have great memories of the Bears, but clearly very few kids today (or I should say families today) are making those same memories from this show. That may be a sad fact, but it’s a fact. For whatever reason, the show doesn’t pull in the numbers. Isn’t it right to use the Country Bear space to bring in a more popular attraction so that more kids today can make those magic memories of an attraction they like? Otherwise aren’t we just telling kids today that they “have to” make great memories of the Bears, when it’s obvious that the kids themselves are not enjoying the Bears like we did?

Roger: I am very disappointed that they have decided to retire the Country Bear Playhouse. I remember going to the show as a child, and still enjoyed it as a teenager, and now young adult. It is true that there aren’t a lot of shows left at DL and with this one closing even less. Being at DL does require a lot of walking, and it is nice to have a few attractions that are a place to sit and enjoy a good show. I understand that DL has to develop, but there has to be some history to the Disneyland that Walt Disney first designed. There should be some parts of DL that just never go away, and this is one of them. By the time I have children it looks like there won’t be any attractions that I can say I went to as a child at the rate they are going.

Now the Bears are leaving. What I want to say is: stop trying to compete with everyone! DL is the best, because of attractions like the Country Bears. If DL insists on destroying all of its magic to make way for the latest, well, then it might as well be just another theme park.

71. Allen spoke mainly to get his point across that ________.

A. the Bears will be missed

B. we should tell kids today that they “have to ” make great memories of the Bears

C. the longtime attraction ought to make way for a future attraction

D. people never care about what they have until all is lost

72. Which is the best choice to complete Roger’s idea: “The Country Bears have been a part of Disneyland for nearly 30 years, __________.”

A. and I feel it is time to give our bears a good rest

B. but anyway, the attraction has lost interest

C. but I know that Disneyland will always be changing, and I accept that

D. and I am sad that the Bears will be leaving

73. What news might get people talking about the problem of the Country Bears?

A. The Country Bear Playhouse will be closed.

B. There will be a new attraction for our guests at Disneyland.

C. The number of visitors to the Country Bear Playhouse is falling.

D. The Bears will retire because of old age and can’t give shows any more

74. Which of the following is not in the same group as the other three?

A. an attraction               B. the latest magic            C. the Bears            D. a theme park

75. Where can this passage be found?

A. In a Web discussion zone.                                                B. In high school students’ compositions.

C. In a report on the popularity of the Country Bears   D. In a suggestion book..

Also some good hobbies for kids are age-appropriate, which can be very good for developing specific areas your child may need help in. For example, some musical instruments are age-specific. Older children who can read would enjoy the guitar, while younger ones will enjoy playing the toy drums while singing.

Post-90’s Generation

We, post-90’s generation, are living in a society full of fierce competition, and developing our special manners and values, which has raised people’s concern.

It’s true that the post-90’s generation have some weaknesses. Some of us, for example, rely on our parents too much and tend to live comfortable lives. Some are even selfish and center everything on themselves. They care little for others.

At the same time, the post-90’s generation desire to learn more about the world around us, and we are independent in thinking. We always keep up with modern science and technology and have many new ideas.

In my opinion, we are sure to succeed as long as we work hard and we will be able to make great contributions to our motherland.
