Studying in the US has been an eyeopening experience.
In China, I had English classes five times a week since the fifth grade. However, I didn't realize how different textbook English could be from everyday English until I came to Hotchkiss School, Connecticut.
When I first learned English, I was told to use “I am fine!” when people greet you by saying, “How are you?” But in the US, I found that people say, “I am good” or “tired”. So, I started to imitate them.
One day, someone greeted me with “What's up?” It totally caught me off guard. I hesitated (迟疑) for a moment and decided to smile because I didn't know how to respond.
Since then, my discoveries between Chinese and American cultures have never ended.
Strange as it may sound, American girls spend plenty of time in the burning sun to get tan. However, in China, girls try every means possible to get their skin paler, or “whiter”. For example, my mom often tells me to use thickscreen creams (面霜) and an umbrella or a big hat.
People back home and here often ask me, “What surprises you most about America?” In fact I am surprised by how hardworking, wellrounded (成熟的) and stressed American students are.
In China, school work is almost everything, so we study hard and that's it. But here, a “good” student gets good grades, does a lot for the community (社会), plays sports and is involved (参与) in art or music.
The kids here are so talented that I am starting to regret giving up playing musical instruments and never thinking about playing sports at an early age.
I value (珍惜) every moment at Hotchkiss because each day is an adventurous journey for me.
56. From the fourth paragraph we can learn that ________.
A. Americans like to greet people with “What's up?”
B. I don't like the way Americans greet people
C. I don't know what to answer about “What's up?”
D. I often greet people with “What's up?”
57. Which word of the following can be used to replace the underlined word “tan” in the sixth paragraph?
A. Red. B. White.
C. Pale. D. Brown.
58. In my opinion, it's not easy for American students to ________.
A. finish their school work
B. become good students
C. play musical instruments
D. do a lot for the community and plays sports

When did you last see a polar bear? On a trip to a zoo, perhaps? If you had attended a winter activity in New York a few years ago, you would have seen a whole polar bear club. These “Polar Bears” are people who meet frequently in the winter to swim in freezing cold water. The members of the Polar Bear Club at Coney Island, New York are usually about the age of 60. Members must satisfy two requirements. First, they must get along well with everyone else in the group; Polar Bears must also agree to swim outdoors at least twice a month from November through February.
Doctors don't agree about the medical effects of coldwinter swimming. Some are worried about the dangers of the condition in which the body's temperature drops so low that finally the heart stops. Other doctors, however, point out that there is more danger of a heart attack during summer swimming because the difference between the air temperature and water temperature is much greater in summer than in winter.
The Polar Bears themselves are satisfied with the benefits of coldwater swimming. They say that their favorite form of exercise is very good for the circulatory system (循环系统) because it forces the blood to move fast to keep the body warm.Coldwater swimmers usually turn bright red after a few minutes in the water. A person who turns blue probably has a very poor circulatory system and should not try coldwater swimming.
The main benefits of coldwater swimming are probably mental. The Polar Bears love to swim all year round; they find it fun and relaxing. As one 70yearold woman says, “When I go into water, I pour my troubles into the ocean and let them float away.”
59. The members of the Polar Bear Club must meet the following requirements EXCEPT that ________.

D. swimming causes more heart attacks in summer than in winter
61. The Polar Bears like to swim yearround, for ________.
A. it is an easy way to keep the body warm in winter
B. they can remain young
C. they find it enjoyable and interesting
D. they might meet fewer troubles in life
62. The passage is mainly about ________.
A. the requirements of the Polar Bear Club

Every object tells a story. Even the most ordinary objects can present to us powerful images. Sometimes it is the ordinary nature of these objects that actually makes them so extraordinary. Such is the case with an old leather shoe in a museum in Alaska. At first glance it does not look like much. It is a woman's shoe of a style popular in the 1890s. But what is unique about this shoe is where it was found. It was discovered on the Checkout Pass, the famous trail used by the people seeking gold in Alaska. Who it belonged to or why it was left there is not known. Was it perhaps dropped by accident as the woman climbed up the 1,500 stairs carved outface? Or did she throw away goods that she didn't need in order to travel lighter?
Over 100,000 people with “gold fever” made this trip hoping to become millionaires. Few of them understood that on their way they would have to cross a harsh wildness. Unprepared for such a dangerous journey, many died of starvation and exposure to the cold weather.
The Canadian government finally started requiring the gold seekers to bring one ton of supplies with them. This was thought to be enough for a person to survive for one year. They would carry their supplies in backpacks (背包) each weighing up to fifty pounds; it usually took at least 40 trips to get everything to the top and over the pass. Whoever dropped the shoe must have been a brave and determined woman. Perhaps she was successful and made it to Alaska. Perhaps she had to turn back in defeat. No one will ever know for sure, but what we do know is that she took part in one of the greatest adventures in the 19th century.
63. The ordinary woman's leather shoe is considered unusual because ________.
A. it was an important clue to life in the past
B. it was found on a famous trail
C. it at one time belonged to a VIP
D. it was a fashionable shoe at that time
64. According to this passage, many people who went to Alaska ________.
A. eventually became millionaires
B. brought with them many shoes
C. had conflicts with the Eskimos
D. were not properly equipped
65. The Canadian government made gold seekers bring one year's supplies with them so that ________.
A. they would not die of hunger and cold
B. the army would have enough food for fighting a war
C. they would change these goods with the Eskimos
D. the supplies would make Alaska rich
66. No matter what happened to the woman who owned the shoe, ________.
A. she must have lived a happy life
B. she certainly dropped the shoe on purpose
C. her adventurous spirit is definitely admired
D. her other shoes were equally fashionable
