阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

Randy Grim brought home his first stray dog(流浪狗)when he was only 5 years old. The fear that he saw in the eyes of that first dog-eventually replaced by gratitude and love-moved Grim so deeply that even at that young age he knew he had found his life’s work. In 1998, Grim formed a nonprofit group called Stray Rescue. The group’s goal: to save as many of St. Louis’s stray dogs as possible.

Today, Grim heads up an organization with a $3 million annual budget, a staff of more than 50 paid workers, thousands of volunteers, and a well-equipped shelter that houses as many as 200 dogs. The money that supports Stray Rescue has been raised through donations and through the force of Grim’s outspoken advocacy(宣传). A man who sees himself as shy is anything but that when it comes to speaking out for dogs.

The impact has been significant. While there are no good estimates as to the number of stray dogs on the streets of St. Louis, today 40% more dogs are being picked up off the streets than just two years ago, about 98% are now adopted into homes.

Stray Rescue also funds(提供资金)a massive education campaign. The group’s bill-boards(广告牌)advocating adoption and neutering(绝育)of dogs are everywhere, as are brochures informing the public of free medical care for dogs and volunteer opportunities at Stray Rescue.

“The whole landscape has changed,”says Pam Walker, St. Louis city health director. Since Grim’s involvement, she says, St. Louis has become a model for good practices in the area.

Officials elsewhere sometimes ask how St. Louis deals with its dog problems. Walker says,“My answer is:We have Randy Grim.”

Grim says he is delighted at the way the city has responded. Many St. Louis citizens“were already there,”he says, in terms of concern for dogs. “I’m really proud of my city.”

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

More than one in four children alive in Britain today will celebrate their 100th birthday, official figures showed. The special figure shows a huge social change, with today’s children likely to survive far longer than their parents or grandparents. Of the 12.4 million children aged 16 and under, 3.3 million(27%)will become someone who is a hundred years old or more. In a class of 30 children, eight can live to be 100. And the rest of the children are likely to get to an old age, even though they will not make it to three figures.

Experts warned that children may live to 100, but that they will not get their State pension until they are 70 or beyond. The State pension age is rising to 66 for both men and women by 2020, and the Government has warned it will continue to rise. Laith Khalaf, a pension expert, said, “Living to an old age is lucky if you can afford it, but a nuisance if you can’t. Those without enough savings will be depending on the State pension which will be changed.”

It also increases the possibility of millions of people surviving until their 100th birthday with a poor quality of life because of poor health and little money. Millions of older people have no pensions, no savings and no plans about how they are going to pay for their retirement other than to carry on working. If the older population demands more resources(资源),then it has to come from their own wealth or the government.

Laith said, “Millions of people will be spending over a third of their lives in retirement. It is high time that we reformed the State pension system. We want to make it fair for future generation.”

61. From the first paragraph we can learn that___________.

A. today’s children probably live longer than their parents

B. few of British children are expected to live to an old age

C. more than 30% of children aged 16 can live to be 100

D. 20% of British children will celebrate their 100th birthday

62. The underlined word “nuisance”in Paragraph 2 probably means__________.

A. somebody who is disabled              B. somebody who is dishonest

C. something that causes trouble     D.  something that is incorrect

63. What kind of life will people living to 100 probably face?

A. A high quality of life because of the development of technology.

B. A low quality of life because of bad health and limited money.

C. A high quality of life because of the increase in food price.

D. A low quality of life because of the present government.

64. Why should the government at present reform the State pension system?

A. The present pension system isn’t quite useful.

B. People nowadays don’t need the pension at all.

C. More and more people ask the government to do so.

D. The present pension system is unfair for future generation.

65. What can be inferred from the text?

A. The retirement age will be raised to 70 or beyond.

B. The government will provide job chances for the retired.

C. The State pension age for men is different from that for women.

D. It will increase the government’s pressure if more children live to 100.

“I don’t want to buy a traditional yearbook. I can keep and share memories of my high school on the Internet.”You may often hear this from many American high school students now. Instead of buying a book, more and more students choose to sign up at My Yearbook.com.

My Yearbook.com was created by two teenagers, Catherine Cook and her brother, 18-year-old David Cook, in 2005. They built it up to about 950,000 members in a year. The site allows people to create a profile(简介)with separate sections for high school, college, graduate school and professional life. Students who sign up are linked to other people at their school. Acting as their own editors, they can select friends from their classmates. The site also connects students through clubs and spprts pages. Like other so-called social-networking sites, it allows members to show photos and post messages. Students can do lots of things that old-fashioned yearbooks can’t offer, including hearing music and watching videos.

Catherine and David developed the idea because they thought that their own yearbooks weren’t good enough and were too expensive. “We just think yearbooks are obsolete,” said Catherine Cook, 16.“If you think about it, all you’re going to do with it is put it on the shelf and never really look at it.” Many American teenagers want different things out of their yearbooks than their parents did. They like the idea of creating an online yearbook. That is the reason why My Yearbook.com is becoming more and more popular.

Some people, however, still wonder if this free website can ever truly replace the traditional printed book of high-school memories-even for the generation that have grown up with the Internet. Some students would like to be the users of the My Yearbook.com as well as buy a traditional yearbook. The“war” between the tradition and the new technology will never end.
