甘肃省会宁县第一中学2015-2016学年高二上学期期中考试英语试题

Snowflakes seem like white stars falling from the sky. But they don’t always look white. Sometimes they appear to have other color1s. Some are red, yellow, or black. There have been snowflakes of almost every shape. Think how it would seem to have these coming all around you. Wouldn’t they look pretty?

Black snow came down in France one year. Another year gray snow fell in Japan. It was found that such snow was mixed with ashes. This made it seem dark. Red snow has come down in other countries. When this happened, it was mixed with red dust. That is why it looked different. Most snow looks like white, but it is really the color1 of ice. It is ice that comes from snow clouds. Each snowflake begins with a small drop of water. More water forms around this drop. The way the water freeze gives the snowflake its shape.

No two snowflakes are of ever just the same size or shape. All start out flat and have six sides. Some snowflakes are broken when they hit the ground, others melt as they fall. When the air is cold and dry, the falling snowflakes are small and hard. If the air is wet and warm, the snowflakes are big and soft.

Would you be surprised to see snowflakes as big as your head falling from the sky? It happened once in our country. It could occur again.

1. Snowflakes are _________ according to the writer.

A. white stars.

B. always white.

C. of similar shapes

D. pretty

2. According to the passage, if the snowflakes are hard and small, the weather should be _________.

A. cold and wet.     B. cold and dry.      C. wet and warm.        D. dry and wet.

3. We can infer from the last paragraph that very large snowflakes _________.

A. occur regularly.        B. will occur regularly

C. occur once a year.       D. don’t often occur.

4. Which of the following statements is true?

Many parents worry that their children’s eating habits may not be good enough to stay healthy. Some children ask for the same food over and over again, some may refuse to try anything new, and some may keep asking for snacks (点心). Therefore, having healthy eating habits becomes one of the most important lessons a child needs to learn. Most parents struggle with managing good eating habits and nutrition (营养) for their children. Parents should make a plan for their children’s nutritional needs.

Start your child’s day with a good breakfast. Breakfast is necessary to provide the nutrition for an active day. Studies show that children do better in study when they begin a day with a good breakfast.

Allow your child to help you plan and prepare a meal. He will be glad to eat foods that he has helped to put on the table.

The mealtime environment has a lot to do with how your child will feel about food. Try to serve your meals at the same place at the same time of a day. Keep the meal itself as the main event and leave the toys and television for later use.

Snacks are also important. We can give our body and brain energy (能量) by eating snacks between meals. Children are often hungriest in the afternoon after school and in the evening.

Offer snacks at regular time between meals. This way, your child won’t refuse a meal because he knows a snack is soon to follow. More importantly, when offering snacks, you should be careful with what to choose.

9. The main idea of the second paragraph is that ____.

A. most children go to school without eating breakfast

B. one shouldn’t eat too much for breakfast

C. a good breakfast is important to children

D. most people haven’t realized the importance of having a good breakfast

10. To help their children form healthy eating habits, parents ____.

A. should encourage their children to eat more often at school

B. can ask the children to help with meal planning and preparation

C. must make the mealtime environment as quiet as possible

D. should serve some snacks while having a meal

11. What would most probably be talked about in the next paragraph of the passage?

A. Examples of healthy snacks.               B. Why snacks are important.

C. Advice on how to keep healthy.              D. What to eat for lunch and supper.

No one is ever too young to make a difference.  16  Eleven-year-old Olivia was concerned about pollution in the Gulf of Mexico (墨西哥湾). She was especially concerned about the birds living along the coast. Olivia wanted to help and she had an idea about what she could do.17 “I’m no James Audubon,” she said, referring to an artist famous for his pictures of birds, “but I can draw.” Olivia felt her watercolor1s of birds were good enough that some people might buy them. She wondered if people would be even more likely to buy her artwork if they knew the money would be used to help birds on the Gulf Coast.

Olivia got in touch with the National Audubon Society. This society honors James Audubon, the artist Olivia admires greatly, and it works to aid and save endangered birds.  18 That was because Olivia promised to create 500 original drawings.
