Navigating Border Security

You may think what you say on WeChat is your own business, but apparently the Canadian authorities don’t agree. In other words, you need to be fully aware of the items you’re not allowed to bring before you travel abroad.

Obscene(淫秽) and pirated(盗版)materials

In many Western countries, possessing and transporting underage porn(黄色书刊) is considered a serious crime. According to the United States Department of Justice, a first-time offender charged with producing child porn faces fines and 15 to 30 years in prison. The website of UK Visas and Immigration also listed pirated copies of movies and music as illegal, because they infringe upon intellectual property rights. If you’re caught bringing pirated products into the UK, the products will be confiscated(没收), and you may face prosecution.

Food, animals and plants

According to Australia’s Department of Immigration and Border Protection, Australia has strict quarantine laws. Animals from overseas could bring diseases and pests into the country and destroy the local environment.

Cash

There is a limit of cash you can bring when traveling abroad. According to UK Visas and Immigration, the maximum amount of cash(including bankers’ drafts and checks) you can bring into the country is £10,000(72,000yuan). You’ll have to declare it if you’re bringing more, or you could face a fine of up to £5,000(46,000yuan). But if you’re entering the UK from another European Union country, you don’t need to declare your cash, no matter how much you have.

Other items

Customs rules vary from country to country. For example, when entering Australia you also need to declare traditional medicines because they may contain endangered plant or animal products. Heritage-related goods, including artworks and stamps, also need to be declared. This is why you should always check the local customs website to make sure of what you can put into your luggage, and of course, your electronic devices.

A 60-year-old homeless woman named Smokie has been sleeping outside in the dirt a few doors down from a man named Elvis Summers.

Most mornings, she stops by Elvis’s Los Angeles apartment and asks if he has any recyclable materials for her. Through these conversations, they struck up a friendship.

One morning, Elvis saw a news article about  man in Oakland who has been making tiny houses out of deserted materials. He was inspired to put off paying a few bills so he could buy the wood and hardware to make Smokie a brand new shelter it took him five days to build it, and now, for the first time in ten years, Smokie a brand new shelter. It took him five days to build it, and now, for the first time in ten years, Smokie has a place to hang the sign. “Home Sweet Home”.

“I had nowhere to really build it, so I just built it in the street outside of my apartment,” Elvis told Good News Network. “The local LAPD police have been super cool, and have told me hey support it—as long as we move it to a different spot every 72 hours.”

He made this pretty time-lapse(延时的) video showing how he did it. The materials, including two locks on the front door and strong wheels for moving it around, cost him about $500.

He plants to get lighter and cheaper materials—without sacrificing the strength of the house—for the next round. Rick Sassen, a branch manager, kindly donated the roof shingles and cedar supporting Smokie’s house, final items Elvis couldn’t afford on his own. How do you get to Carnegie Hall? “Practice, practice, practice” is the well-known answer. But for some inspirting young musicians from the Afghanistan National Institute of Music in Kabul, the road to the famous concert ball was more difficult.

The Afghan Youth Orchestra(AYO) is made up of young people who study at the Afghanistan National Institute of Music. It was the first orchestra created in Afghanistan in 30 years.

Gulalai Norestani, 14, plays a traditional string instrument. Like many students, Gulalai became an orphan when her parents were killed during the ongoing war. Music is her salvation. “Music for me is a language of peace,” Gulalai said. “It connects people.”

Milad Yousufi, 18, is a piano student. “Music is my life,” he said. Milad also lost many of his family members during the war. When music was banned, he couldn’t even touch a piano. So as a 12-year-old boy, he started painting and drawing. “I used to draw a piano,” he said. Finally, Milad was free to play a real piano. “Our dream came true,” he said, “It is everyone’s dream to play in Carnegie Hall.”

And he has more dreams. “I have a dream to continue my education in America,” he explained. “I am working hard to make that happen. Then I have a dream to come back to Afghanistan and teach and serve people.”

Because of continuing limits in Afghanistan, Gulalai and Milad listen mostly to the kind of classical music they played at Carnegie Hall. But Gulalai says she’s heard a bit of Jennifer Lopez and Shakira and she likes them. Milad says he has heard of Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber, but hasn’t yet had a chance to listen to them.

Before Milad went onstage that night with the band of Afghan kids who had survived a war, I asked him if he had ever experienced true peace. “No, not yet,” he answered, adding, “I hope I will be able to.”

Later during the performance, as he played one of Carnegie Hall’s famous grand pianos, the look of pure joy on his face convinced me that he found peace in music.

D. saves her from the killing at war

The last thing Caitlin Hipp would have expected as she prepared to turn 28 years old was to be living at hone with her parents. All she’s ever wanted to do is to become an elementary school teacher. And she’s been working through her teaching certifications for four years after obtaining an education degree from Bowling Green State University in Ohio, US.

Hipp has racked up $100,000 in student loan debt and isn’t able to earn enough through working as a part-time skating instructor and restaurant server to live anywhere other than home.

The Pew Research Center recently reported that 2014 was a milestone in the evolving living arrangements of young adults in the US. For the first time since 1880, adults aged 18 to 34 became more likely to be living with a parent than to be living on their own. Before 2014, the most common living arrangement for young adults was to be living in their own property as part of a couple.

UBS Financial Services, a Swiss global financial services company, released a report that even suggests one reason for the growing number of young adults still living at home could be that their family doesn’t want them to leave.

The report shows that 74 percent of millennials(千禧一代)get some kind of financial support from their parents after college. It finds that millennials have redefined the ties that combine parents and children. “Millennials see their parents as peers, friends and guiders. Nearly three quarters talked with their parents more than once a week during college. In return, their parents happily provide financial support well into adulthood, helping fund everything for them.”

Stuart Hoffman, chief economist for the PNC Financial Group in the US, said although job growth for millennials since 2014 has improved, which doesn’t necessarily mean that millennials are starting to fly the nest. He said, “There’s no doubt it has held back household formation and purchases on things people spend money on related to household formation and child-rearing,” Hoffman explained. “But they are probably traveling more and eating out more if they don’t have a house expense or marriage. I don’t know if it represents a change in moral values. But it’s much more common for adult children to live in their parent’s homes because it’s becoming part of the culture.”

12. Why does Caitlin Hipp have to live at home with her parents?

A. Because she can’t afford to live on her own

B. Because she doesn’t want to live anywhere other than home

C. Because she wants to obtain more degrees

D. Because she wants to be an elementary school teacher

13. What can we learn about young adults aged 18 to 34 before 2014?

A. They didn’t have the freedom to arrange their living

B. They would rather live with their parents than live by themselves

C. They started to fly the nest as more jobs were provided

D. They preferred to live away from their parents

14. What conclusion can we draw from the report released by the Swiss company?

A. Children living with parents is becoming part of the culture

B. The majority of millennials refuse to get financial help from parents

C. Most millennials are building closer relationship with their parents

D. Young people tend to live at home because of fewer job opportunities

15. What’s Stuart Hoffman’s attitude towards this trend?

A. Indifferent    B. Subjective

C. Objective    D. Negative
