I was having a great morning until I sat down in front of my office computer. "Your password has run out," a server message flashed on my screen, with instructions for changing it. Coming up with a new code doesn’t seem like a big deal unless you work at my company, where we have to change it monthly, using at least one uppercase(大写的) character, one lowercase character, one symbol, and one number. Oh, and the whole thing can’t be fewer than eight characters. And I can’t use any of the same passwords I’ve used in the past three months.

Suddenly I was cross. What didn’t make it any better was that I was deeply depressed after my recent divorce. The flashing cursor(光标) was still waiting for me to type a password that I’d have to re-enter many times for the next 30 days. I remembered a tip from my former boss: I’m going to use a password to change my life.

I decided to choose a password, which would remind me that I shouldn’t let myself be a victim of my recent breakup and that I was strong enough to do something about it. I made my password Forgive@h3r.

I had to type this statement several times a day. Each time my computer would lock. Each time my screen saver with her photo would appear. Each time I would come back from eating lunch alone. In my mind, I wrote "forgive her" every day.

The simple action changed the way I looked at my ex-wife. That constant reminder led me to accept the way things had happened at the end of my marriage and adopt a new way of dealing with my depression. As the month wore on, I felt slow healing began to take place. By the time my server reminded me to reset my password the following month, I felt free.

24.According to the author’s company, which code is suitable?

A.never2&late              B.1u#Life              C.HEALTHY*keeping              D.persist@4Ever

25.Which word can replace the underlined word "cross" in Paragraph 2?

A.Nervous.              B.Curious.              C.Anxious.              D.Angry.

26.Why did the author change his password into Forgive@h3r?

A.To make it easier for him to remember.

B.To protect his computer against hacker attacks.

C.To reduce his frustration of the recent divorce.

D.To inform people of the importance of forgiveness.

27.What is the best title of the passage?

A.How a Password Changed My Life

B.What an Unsuccessful Marriage Taught Me

C.Learn the Best Way to Deal with Depression

D.Choose a Suitable Password for Your Computer

根据第一段中的"using at least one uppercase(大写的)character, one lowercase character, one symbol, and one number. Oh, and the whole thing can’t be fewer than eight characters"可知,作者所在的公司对员工设置密码的要求是:密码中至少有一个大写字母、一个小写字母、一个符号和一个数字,且字符数不得少于8个。

What didn’t make it any better was that I was deeply depressed after my recent divorce"可知,画线词所在句表示的是作者突然感到很生气。

I decided to choose a password, which would remind me that I shouldn’t let myself be a victim of my recent breakup and that I was strong enough to do something about it. I made my password Forgive@h3r "可知答案。

December usually marks the start of humpback whale season in Hawaii. But experts say the animals have been slow to return.

The giant whales are an iconic part of winter on the islands and a source of income for tour operators. But officials at the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary said they’ve been getting reports that the whales have been difficult to spot so far.

"This isn’t a concern. But it’s of interest. One theory was that something like this happened as whales increased. It’s a product of their success," said Ed Lyman. He is a Maui-based resource protection manager and response coordinator for the sanctuary.

"What I’m seeing out there right now is what I expected a month ago," said Lyman. He said he was surprised by how few of the animals he saw while responding to a call about a distressed calf on Christmas Eve. "We’ve just seen a handful of whales."

It will be a while before officials have hard numbers. That is because the annual whale counts don’t take place until the last Saturday of January, February and March. This is according to former sanctuary co-manager Jeff Walters.

"They don’t necessarily show up in the same place at the same time every year," Walters said.

More than 10,000 humpback whales make the winter journey from Alaska to the warm waters off Hawaii. There, they mate and give birth.

Lyman said the whales’ absence could just mean they’re spending more time feeding in northern waters. That’s possibly because of El Niño disruptions. Or it may be because their population has gone up.

"With more animals, they’re competing against each other for that food resource, and it takes huge energy reserves to make that long migration over 2,000 miles," he explained.

28.Which isn’t the reason why humpback whales are slow to return according to Lyman?

A.The effect of El Niño is destructive.

B.The number of them is increasing.

C.They are busy reserving energy.

D.They are largely hunted by humans.

29.What does the underlined word "hard" in Paragraph 5 probably mean?

A.exact              B.great              C.tough              D.general

30.What is Lyman’s reaction to the reports that the whales have been difficult to spot so far?

A.Concerned.              B.Indifferent.              C.Calm.              D.Puzzled.

31.What is the passage mainly about?

A.The migration habit of whales.

B.Why the whales are slow to return.

C.How El Niño slows whale migration down.

D.Worries about the slowdown of whale migration.

That is because the annual whale counts don’t take place until ..."

That isn’t a concern. But it’s of interest"以及后文Lyman认为座头鲸的数量增加了的内容可推断出, Lyman 对这些报道是很镇定的。

Children who are raised in households with dogs during their first year of life may have a lower risk of asthma(哮喘)a few years later, a new study suggests.

In the study, the researchers looked at early exposure to dogs and farm animals and the rate of asthma among about 276,000 school-age children in Sweden. Among the school-age kids in the study, those who had been exposed to dogs during their first year of life were 13 percent less likely to have asthma at age 6.

The researchers said they don’t know for sure what exactly may explain the relationship between early exposure to animals and a reduced risk of asthma. "It might be due to a single factor, or more likely, a combination of several factors related to a dog ownership lifestyle or dog owners’ attitudes, such as kids’ exposure to household dirt and pet dust, time spent outdoors or being physically active," Fall told LiveScience. "As a parent in a dog-and-baby household, it is nearly impossible to keep everything clean, and maybe this is a good thing for your baby’s future health."

"My take-home message from this study is that parents at this point do not need to worry about keeping their dog when expecting a baby for fear of asthmatic disease," Fall said. "I do want to be clear that this recommendation is valid only for families without a child already having allergies. If they already have a furred-animal-allergic child, we do not recommend them to get a furred pet."

According to this hypothesis, being exposed to bacteria early in life is crucial for shaping a healthy immune system, and may play a role in modifying a person’s risk of developing asthma and allergies. "As to allergies and asthma, it is partially genetic, but studies like this do show us that your environment does play a key role in the development of your immune system, and the development of allergies and asthma," Parikh told LiveScience.

32.Which of the following will Fall probably agree with?

A.The link between keeping pets and having asthma among kids isn’t clear.

B.Parents should take their pet for physical examination regularly.

C.Asthma is still a common and serious disease for most children.

D.Dirt and pet dust in the family are bad for children’s health.

33.Which of the following children shouldn’t have a dog?

A.Children who have asthma.

B.Children who have allergies to fur.

C.Children who are lack of patience.

D.Children who dislike outdoor activities.

34.What can be inferred from the last paragraph?

A.Most bacteria are good for immune system.

B.Both allergies and asthma are totally genetic.

C.It’s easy for people to develop asthma and allergies.

D.Environment can change your immune system greatly.

35.What’s the purpose of the passage?

In China, chain restaurants, especially the big multinational ones, are cool. Going to Starbucks, for example, is a status symbol. It not only says, “I’m rich enough to buy this overpriced coffee,” but also, “I’m cosmopolitan(见多识广的)enough to be part of globalization.”

Where I come from in the UK, however, chains are neither fashionable nor gourmet (美食的). Chains are where you go on New Year’s Day when nowhere else is open, or when you are 5 years old and your parents can’t stand hearing, “I’m huuuuuungry!” any longer. In my own case (with regards to McDonald’s), a chain is where you are taken on your first “date”. Even at the age of 13, I knew to give the guy the “let’s just be friends” phone call the next day.

In the UK, independent cafes and restaurants are making a comeback on the fashion scene. Nowadays, a Londoner who says “let’s meet for a coffee at Monmouth” (an independent cafe) is much cooler than one who says “let’s go to Starbucks”. Even if Monmouth’s coffee is a little more expensive, there’s a satisfaction in knowing your pounds aren’t going straight to the big corporations.

Of course, there are chain stores all over the UK; you can’t go five minutes without spotting a Costa Coffee. But numbers do not add up to good taste.

I do, however, have a confession (坦白). After moving to China I had moments when all the rice and Kung Pao Chicken became too much. I, too, have retreated to McDonald’s.

39.Many Chinese people like to go to multinational chain restaurants because ______.

A.the restaurants give customers a taste of foreign culture.

B.the restaurants offer different food and drinks from other restaurants.

C.they believe that eating there will show their wealth and social status.

D.these restaurants are perfect places for a romantic date.

40.Which of the following statements is TRUE?

A.The author has grown tired of Chinese food.

B.Branches of Monmouth’s cafe can be found all over the UK.

C.Most independent stores are closed on New Year’s Day in the UK.

D.It is cool in the UK to take your first date to a chain restaurant.

41.We can infer from the article that ______.

A.the author doesn’t like food from Pizza Hut.

B.many Britons don’t like big corporations.

C.many Britons think that numbers mean poor quality.

D.the author doesn’t like to follow fashion trends.

“A photograph that one has taken of oneself, typically with a smart phone or webcam and uploaded to a social media website” is the definition of “selfie” in the Oxford English Dictionary. In fact, it wasn’t even in the dictionary until August of last year. It earned its place there because people are now so obsessed with (对……痴迷) selfies ─ we take them when we try on a new hat, play with our pets or when we meet a friend whom we haven’t seen in a while.

But is there any scientific explanation for this obsession? Well, you should probably ask James Kilner, a neuroscientist(神经系统科学家) at University College London.

Through our lifetime we become experts at recognizing and interpreting other people’s faces and facial expressions. In contrast, according to Kilner, we have a very poor understanding of our own faces since we have little experience of looking at them ─ we just feel them most of the time. This has been proved in previous studies, according to the BBC.

Kilner found that most people chose the more attractive picture. This suggests that we tend to think of ourselves as better-looking than we actually are. To further test how we actually perceive our own faces, Kilner carried out another study. He showed people different versions of their own portrait ─ the original, one that had been edited to look less attractive and one that was made more attractive ─ and asked them to pick the version which they thought looked most like them. They chose the more attractive version.

But what does it say about selfies? Well, isn’t that obvious? Selfies give us the power to create a photograph ─ by taking it from various angles, with different poses, using filters (滤色镜) and so on ─ that better matches our expectations with our actual faces.

“You suddenly have control in a way that you don’t have in non-virtual(非虚拟的)interactions,” Kilner told the Canada-based CTV News. Selfies allow you “to keep taking pictures until you manage to take one you’re happy with”, he explained.

43.What is the passage mainly about?

A.The definition and fun of taking selfies.

B.A study of why people love taking selfies.

C.How taking selfies influences people’s daily lives.

D.How to interpret people’s facial expressions in their selfies.

44.The underlined word “perceive” in Paragraph 4 can be replaced by “______”.

A.interpret              B.choose              C.beautify              D.explain

45.What did Kilner discover from his researches?

A.People tend to believe they look more attractive than they actually are.

B.People tend to spend more time looking at their faces than at others’.

C.People interpret others’ facial expressions worse than their own.

D.People who like taking selfies know more about their facial expressions.

46.According to Kilner, people like taking selfies probably because they think ______.

A.it is a good chance to learn more about their actual faces.

B.it allows them to satisfy their expectations with their appearances.

C.it enables them to interact with their friends in social media.

D.it is a way to respond to others’ facial expressions correctly.

It never occurred to anybody, not even the creators that the world would care about the complex lives, loves and sufferings of a group of attractive and witty New Yorkers. But there’s no doubt that Friends(老友记)has become more than just a successful situation comedy ─ it has established itself as one of the last great television phenomena of the last century. Along the way, it has made its half-dozen leading actors famous.

Looking back on the strong friendship between the group of three men and three women who frequently gather at each other’s apartments and at Greenwich Village’s Central Perk coffee house, Friends was created by television producers, David Crane and Marta Kauffman. In 1993, the pair met producer Kevin S. Bright. Then the three became partners and got a deal to produce a new comedy for Warner Brothers. What they came up with was based on Crane and Kauffman’s after-college years, when they hung out at the local coffee house and involved themselves in every aspect of each other’s lives.

It didn’t take long for viewers to make friends with Friends. The situation comedy quickly became a top ten hit. Critics loved it as well. Entertainment Weekly said the show operated like a Broadway show, with twisty plots and unique jokes. The television theme song has also been a success with the public. The song’s success helped save the television theme song. An ABC(美国广播公司)executive was ready to order very short music intros(前奏) on his network’s shows, thinking that viewers would hit the remote control as soon as the opening started. But the success of the Friends theme song led the ABC executive to change his mind ─ remote controls or not, the TV theme song would stay.

Years have gone by, but Friends remains and will remain an example of a modern US situation comedy that is both hugely entertaining television and nothing short of a genuine latter-day social phenomenon.

47.What is stressed in the second paragraph?

A.The origin of Friends.              B.The role models of Friends.

C.The popularity of Friends.              D.The brilliance of Friends.

48.Which of the following is TRUE about Friends?

A.It has a simple but entertaining plot.

B.It is about friendship between college students.

C.It was criticized by Entertainment Weekly.

D.It first came into being in the 1990s.

49.What can we learn from the passage?

A.Producer, Kevin S. Bright, graduated from the same college as David Crane.

B.ABC once replaced the theme song of its TV show with a short music intro.

C.The ABC executive thought highly of the theme song of Friends.

D.Marta Kauffman expected Friends to achieve great success.

50.What might the author think of Friends?

A.Its merits outweigh its shortcomings.

B.He/she shows great affection towards it.

C.He/she has a reserved attitude towards its success.

D.Its success lies in the lack of good situation comedies.

It’s helpful not only because you learn your way around the building and get to meet some teachers, but you also get to meet fellow freshmen. 52 When you talk to people at orientation, you’ll probably find lots of them feeling just like you. Talking about a common concern with them can spark new friendships.

53 The work in high school gives you a more advanced knowledge. So you may find you have more work to do or that it’s more challenging. But these challenges can make you feel less bored with the usual routine. 54

High school teaches you the basics of academic disciplines, time management, and social skills while providing you with a little extra support and guidance. It’s kind of like a bicycle with training wheels. It gives you the chance to take off those training wheels and learn how to be more independent. 55 Even if you don’t get off to the best start, that’s normal, too — everybody’s wobbly(不稳定的) the first time. Be patient and keep trying. Once you’ve adjusted to your new independence you may find you can go further.

A. It’s OK if you’re nervous at first.

B. How about the work — is it harder?

C. If your work is overwhelming, teachers are available.

D. Adjusting to new independence doesn’t come easily.

E. If you’re having thoughts like these, you’re not alone.

F. It feels great when you’ve mastered something difficult.

G. When you show up on your first school day you recognize familiar faces.

This is the season for giving. Looking to get in touch with your generous side? Learn these four habits of truly thoughtful gift givers.

 56

Considerate gift giving is as much about planning as it is about how well you know the person. Take time to think about his or her personality and interests to figure out how he or she will get the most value.

They don’t focus on cost.

The practice of thoughtful giving offers a wealth of benefits, but that doesn’t mean givers should focus on expensive gifts. 57 It seems that having more cash could actually reduce compassion(同情). And isn’t compassion what this time of year is all about? So don’t take it too hard if you don’t have a lot to spend    58

They make gifts personal.

Gifting is an opportunity to let a person know how much you appreciate and love him, and show how well you know him. 59 Book a massage (按摩), take them to a wine tasting event, or get a couple of tickets to a concert or show. If you’re buying for a parent, taking their kids for an evening could be the best gift of all.

They think about the presentation.

60 See what you have around your house to customize (自定义) packaging. You can use pretty towels to cover something like a bottle of wine. You can also tie on a decoration that fits the theme of your gift.

A. They plan ahead.

B. Instead, get creative.

C. They enjoy giving more than receiving.

D. In fact, thoughtful gift givers don’t concentrate on the cost of presents.

E. Thoughtful gift givers pay attention to detail, including how their gifts are packaged.

F. Make a list of your ideas ahead of time to make sure you find the perfect fit for everyone.

G. If you’re buying for someone who seems to have everything, consider gifting an experience.

The dating world is cruel. No matter how much we stress the importance of "inner beauty", looks are undoubtedly 101 advantage in the dating game. Well, such a dream is highly unlikely, according to newly 104 (publish) research.

The study, 105 focused on the responses of 126 female undergraduates after romantic rejection, 106 (lead) by psychologist Geoff MacDonald. Researchers found women’s distancing 107 an unattractive man — even when that unattractive man offered acceptance — was also a 108 (consequent) of rejection by an attractive man. In other words, after being refused by a handsome fellow, women were found to be more likely to reject a less attractive man, thus 109 (make) the pain caused by the initial rejection even worse. 101.

That the...and notice him其实是一个主语从句,从句中含有一个定语从句he admires,修饰先行词woman,主语从句的谓语是由and连接的will realize(will)notice。

to

因此处是代替前面的名词advice(是不可数名词,没复数形式。) 故them改为it

因encourage后有宾语me,所以用主动形式,不用被动结构,即encourage sb to do sth鼓励某人干某事。故去掉was

故after改为before

因so/such…that…是结果状语从句的连词,而nervous是形容词该用so, so+adj./adv.+that…;such+(a/an)+n.(单数)/复数/不可数名词+that…。故such改为so

故time改为times

可知thanks to “幸亏,多亏 thanks for“……而感谢更符合语境之意。故for改为to

it in

在固定短语have difficulty with sth./(in)doing sth."做某事有困难",difficulty是不可数名词,不能用复数形式。

第二处:take→takes。

as... as possible "尽可能……"

第七处:interest前加that/which。

第八处:a→an。

第九处:they→it。

Our school, located in the North China Plain, is a famous model boarding high school with more than 200 teachers and 3,000 students. We have several modern teaching buildings, which are about 30,000 square meters. Inside the buildings, there are modern classrooms, labs for different subjects, a big library with thousands of books and a multi-function gym, where we take exercise and have our physical lessons. If you come to our school, you will fall in love with the wonderful environment. You can see many kinds of flowers and trees all over the school. What impresses you most is the beautiful scenery and sweet smell of the flowers. So I’m proud to say the teachers and students in our school live in comfortable conditions.

Hi Worried:

I’m sorry to know that you’re having such a bad time at the moment. The truth is everyone will have one of those periods when things seem to be wrong, so you don’t have to worry so much. The important thing is to learn to control your temper so that you may not do or say anything you’ll regret. Here are three useful tips:

First, talk to someone you trust about how you feel. This is a good way of letting your anger out without hurting others or yourself. Second, go outdoors and play team games with your friendsas physical exercise is an effective way to get rid of anger .And third, remain optimistic about your future. Such a positive attitude towards life can be helpful in lifting your spirits.

I hope you’ll soon feel calmer and carry on as normal.

Yours,

Li Hua
