The holidays are coming up, and if you are looking for some great things to do with your kids to celebrate the season, look no further. The more you let them in on the holiday planning fun, the more exciting it will be for them, and the more pride they can take in a successful holiday. There is a tendency to exclude kids from the holiday preparations for many reasons: we want everything to be perfect or maybe we don’t trust that they’ll do it right. However, involving kids in holiday preparations can be good for them, as well as fun for you.

Kid-created decorations are often the best part of any holiday table. People always love the handmade decorations the best, because they are truly made with love, and they’re usually the most fun. Find small things your kids can do, like creating centerpieces or paper rings, and direct their creations. Be sure to put these things out where people can see them when they come over, because there’s nothing worse than creating something you’re proud of and having it hidden. Let them show your guests what they’ve made and talk about it. They’ll be happy to do so!

What is a better way to get into the spirit of the season than to go shopping? Kids love to pick out gifts for others. Let them choose whatever they think the person they’re buying for would like. This will help them to be proud of their gifts, as well as try to budget according to the amount of money you have given them. You can also let them pack their own gifts. Give them options of gift bags or packing paper and watch them go to town. It may not be perfect, but it will be precious, for sure.

Kids love to cook. They love to get their hands dirty and create fun meals with the help of their parents. They also feel a sense of pride in the food items they create, and they love it when people eat what they make and talk about how delicious it is. Allowing your kids into the kitchen can help them learn cooking and baking, and can also give them ownership of the holiday meal. Of course, you’ll have to help them along the way, but taking that time can really make a kid’s day.

Holiday crafts are the best. Creating centerpieces and ornaments(装饰品) is fun, but you can also look to nature for inspiration. Leaf collages (拼贴画) or prints are a fun way to capture the fall. Jack-o’-lanterns are an excellent way to celebrate Halloween, and there is endless inspiration to take from the first snowflakes that fall in winter. Your imagination is the key!

41.The underlined word"exclude"can be best replaced by" ".

A.save              B.hide              C.prevent              D.protect

42.What should parents do as for the handmade decorations?

A.Try to take full advantage of kids’ creativity.

B.Take pride in them and show them to others.

C.Ask kids to make them with great care and love.

D.Allow kids to make them entirely by themselves.

43.What’s the author’s attitude towards allowing kids to choose the gifts when shopping?

A.Approving.              B.Doubtful.              C.Negative.              D.Critical.

44.The author mentions Jack-o’-lanterns in the last paragraph to .

A.show the benefits of making handmade artworks

B.stress the great influence Halloween has on people

C.call on people to make full use of their imagination

D.inspire parents to celebrate Halloween in a different way

45.What is the purpose of the passage?

New Zealand will create one of the largest marine protected areas in the world, spanning an area of 620,000 sq km.

The Kermadec Ocean Sanctuary (保护区) will be one of the world’s most significant fully protected ecosystems, the prime minister of New Zealand, John Key, told the UN General Assembly in New York.

The sanctuary is in the South Pacific Ocean, about 1,000 km north-east of New Zealand, and expands a marine reserve that surrounds some small islands. The area is considered important in terms of biodiversity, featuring nearly 35 species of whales and dolphins, 150 types of fish and three of the world’s seven sea turtle species. It is also geologically significant, including the world’s longest chain of underwater volcanoes and the second deepest ocean trench, into 10 km underwater — deeper than Mount Everest’s height. The scale of the sanctuary will dwarf (矮化) any previous New Zealand’s protected area, spanning twice the size of the country’s mainland. It will cover 15% of New Zealand’s economic zone.

Commercial and recreational fishing will be completely banned, as will oil, gas and mineral prospecting (勘探), exploration and mining. Key’s government aims to pass legislation establishing the sanctuary next year.

"The sanctuary is a world-class, unspoiled marine environment and New Zealand is proud to protect it for future generations,"Key said."New Zealanders value our coasts and oceans, which are an important part of our culture, economy and environment and we are committed to managing them sustainably. Creating protected areas will support not only our own fisheries, but those of our Pacific neighbors, adding to New Zealand’s efforts to help grow Pacific economies through the responsible management of their ocean resources."

Nick Smith, New Zealand’s environment minister, said the sanctuary might impose a cost upon the mining industry but that it is important to protect the ocean before exploration takes place."New Zealand needs to use its vast ocean resources for jobs and exports in industries like fishing, aquaculture, minerals and energy, but we also need to set aside special areas where nature comes first and marine life is fully protected,"Smith said.

New Zealand will monitor the area via its navy and satellite technology. The Kermadec region will join three other key areas in the Pacific protected by the US, the UK and Australia.

Matt Rand, director of the Pew Charitable Trusts’ Global Ocean Legacy (遗产) campaign, welcomed Key’s announcement."New Zealand will create the gold standard of conservation areas in the sanctuary, preserving one of the few ly unspoiled areas of ocean on Earth,"he said."This commitment is an exciting step toward meeting global goals to safeguard at least 30% of the ocean through fully protected marine reserves."

50.Which of the following about the Kermadec Ocean Sanctuary is TRUE?

A.It will also be protected by the UN.

B.It will be in the charge of John Key.

C.It will be the largest marine protected area.

D.It will be an area with a fully protected ecosystem.

A.It has a superior geographical location.

B.It has many different kinds of sea animals.

C.Its environment is suitable for the growth of marine life.

D.It is the only unspoiled area of ocean remained on Earth.

B.All Pacific countries should be responsible for ocean resources.

D.New Zealand has made great achievement in creating protected areas.

They say that after a parent dies, the surviving children can take on some of their parent’s characteristics. I resisted for years becoming anything like my dad or at least acknowledging that I was anything like him because, well, because I wanted to be me, not him; but there I sat at his memorial service several months ago, telling myself,"You’ve got a lot more of your dad in you than you think."

There’s this phrase my dad used, and I know I’m going to sound rude to complain about it, but it did use to bother me."I’m so proud of you,"he told us kids, whether we’d won a sailing race (like my older brother) or run a marathon (like my younger sister) or managed to get a book published (like me)."I’m so proud of you."That should be a good thing, but here’s what always went through my unforgiving mind:"You’re taking credit for what isn’t really yours. You can be proud, but the achievement is mine."Ain’t it like a son? Your parent is doing his best to give you praise, and you’re cutting him down to size."I’m so proud of you."It came out of my dad’s mouth all the time, on those long-distance calls where I might have mentioned something that happened at work or when he and Mom came to visit and we showed off the talents of our two boys."I’m so proud of you"was the remark that was often repeated.

I knew the feeling of parental pride well, especially when my boys achieved in ways that were beyond my comprehension and ability, but I looked for other ways to express it."That’s an incredible story you’ve written,"I would say about the composition."I can’t believe how fast you solved that problem,"I would admire the work of the math genius. But never just the blanket phrase.

I thought that by making my praise specific, it would feel like I was claiming their achievement less as mine and more as one they could own themselves. But there I was at Dad’s memorial, about to eulogize him, thinking that I could say exactly what my brother said,"He lets me be me."That was his achievement. In the bland phrase that I promised I would never utter to my children was a world of forgiveness, care and appreciation. We kids could do no wrong in my father’s eyes, and because of that we found the freedom to fly far from the nest. What I took for a bad thing was love. So just the other day when my older son, now a promising manager, sent me an email about the thank-you dinner his latest client threw him, I thought hard for clever things to say, finally realizing your kids don’t really need your praise. They just want what my dad gave me."I’m so proud of you,"I wrote. Just like the old man.
