It was Thanksgiving morning and in the crowded kitchen of my small home I was busy preparing the traditional Thanksgiving turkey when the doorbell rang. I opened the front door and saw two small children in rags huddling together inside the storm door on the top step.

“Any old paper, lady?” asked one of them.

I was busy. I wanted to say “no” until I looked down at their feet. They were wearing thin little sandals, wet with heavy snow.

“Come in and I’ll make you a cup of hot cocoa.”

They walked over and sat down at the table. Their wet scandals left marks upon the floor. I served them cocoa and bread with jam to fight against the cold outside. Then I went back to the kitchen and stated again on my household budget.

The silence in the front door struck me. I looked in. the girl held the empty cup in her hands, looking at it. The boy asked in a flat voice, “Lady, are you rich?”

“Am I rich? Mercy, no!”

I looked at my shabby slipcover (家具套). The girl put her cup back in its sauce carefully and said, “Your cups match your saucer.” Her voice was hungry with a need that no amount of food could supply. They left after that, holding their bundles of papers against the wind. They didn’t say “Thank you”. They didn’t need to. They had reminded me that I had so much for which to be grateful.

Plain china cups and saucers were only worth five pence. But they matched.

I tasted the potatoes and stirred the meat soup. Potatoes and brown meat soup, a roof covered over our heads, my man with a good, steady job—these matched, too.

I moved the chairs back from the fire and cleaned the living room. The muddy prints of small scandals were still wet upon my floor. Let them be for a whole, I thought, just in case I should begin to feel how rich I am.

A. she saw that the lady’s room was comfortable.

B. she saw the cups matched the saucers.

As you move around your home, take a good look at the things you have. It is likely that your living room will have a television set and a video, and your kitchen a washing machine and a microwave oven. Your bedroom drawers will be filled with almost three times as many clothes as you need. You almost certainly own a car and possibly a home computer, holiday abroad at least once a year and eat out at least once a week.

Now, perhaps, more than ever before, people are wondering what life is all about, and what it is for. Seeking material success is beginning to trouble large numbers of people around the world. They feel that the long-hours work culture to make more money to buy more things is eating up their lives, leaving them very little time or energy for family or pastimes. Many are turning to other ways of living and downshifting is one of them.

Six percent of workers in Britain took the decision to downshift last year. One couple who downshifted is Daniel and Liz. They used to work in central London. He was a newspaper reporter and she used to work for an international bank. They would go to work by train every day from their large house in the suburbs , leaving their two children with a nanny (保姆) . Most evenings Daniel wouldn’t get home until eight or nine o’clock, and nearly twice a month he would have to fly to New York for meetings. They both earned a large amount of money but began to feel that life was passing them by.

Nowadays, they run a farm in the mountains of Wales, “I always wanted to have a farm here,” says Daniel, “and we took almost a year to make the decision to downshift. It’s taken some getting used to , but it’s been worth it . We have to think twice now about spending money on car repairs and we no longer have any holidays. However, I think it’s made us stronger as a family, and the children are a lot happier.”

Liz, however, is not quite sure. “I used to enjoy my job, even though it was hard work and long hours. I’m not really a country girl, but I suppose I’m gradually getting used to looking after the animals. One thing I do like, though, is being able to see more of my children. My advice for other people wanting to do the same is not to think about it too much or you might not do it at all.”

54.When Daniel was a reporter, he         .

A.lived in central London               B.disliked his job

C.missed his children                  D.was well paid

55.Daniel and Liz both agree that the move to the farm _________.         .

A.was easy to organize                            B.has improved family life

C.was extremely expensive                        D.have been a total success

56.What does the underlined “it” in the last paragraph refer to?

A.Child-caring.                B.Liz’s advice.                 C.Downshifting.                D.Liz’s job.

57.The underlined word “downshifting” in the second paragraph means         .

A.repairing your car by yourself

B.spending money carefully

C.moving out to the countryside to live a simpler and better life

D.living in a big house in the suburbs and dining out once a week

Recently, another study has been carried out about who is the greatest American president. Sixty-five presidential historians took part in it and they judged the past forty-two American leaders based on ten qualities of leadership, which include public persuasion, crisis (危机) leadership, the management of economy, moral leadership and international relations. The historians also looked at administrative (行政的) ability, relations with Congress, goal setting and pursuit (追求) of equal justice for all. Finally, the experts considered performance based on the historical period in which the president lived.

The historians chose Abraham Lincoln as America’s greatest president. He had also been named best president in a similar study in 2000. Abraham Lincoln was the only president in American history to lead the nation during the Civil War in the 1860s. He united the nation at last. And he took the first steps that destroyed the institution of slavery in America.

Edna Medford is a professor of history at Howard University in Washington, D.C. She was an adviser on this study and the earlier one. She says Abraham Lincoln is seen to represent the values that the nation most honors like truthfulness, moderation (温和) and respect for human rights.

The historians named America’s first president, George Washington, as second on the list of greatest presidents. Franklin D. Roosevelt, Theodore Roosevelt and Harry Truman are next in that order. John F. Kennedy, the country’s first Roman Catholic president, is sixth on the list. Like Abraham Lincoln, John F. Kennedy was murdered while in office.

Among recent presidents, Ronald Reagan was named the tenth best president. Bill Clinton was rated fifteenth. And the historians rated former president George W. Bush as number thirty-six. His father, George H.W. Bush, did much better. He was rated as number eighteen.

62.Abraham Lincoln was chosen as America’s greatest president mainly because ________.

A.he led the people to end slavery and united the nation

B.he caused the Civil War and fought against slavery

C.he was the only president to join in a civil war

D.he owned the ten qualities of leadership

63.According to the recent study, a good president wouldn’t ________.

A.persuade the public to follow some rules

B.take measures to deal with an economic crisis

C.start a war between countries

D.run after equal justice for the people

64.Which of the following presidents did worst when he was in power according to the recent study?

A. John F. Kennedy.               B.  George Washington

C.  Bill Clinton                    D.  George W. Bush

65.According to the passage, the greatest American president from No.1 to No.6 should be ____.

B.  Abraham Lincoln → George Washington → Theodore Roosevelt→ Franklin D. Roosevelt → John F. Kennedy → Harry Truman

答案及解析:

知识点:书面表达

With the time on, there is an increasing tendency that more and more tourists have been paying greater attention to environment protection. However, several years ago, as we know, in the places of interest some tourists threw away rubbish here and there, such as plastic bags, waste paper, tins and so on. Besides, some of them climbed the trees, picked flowers freely and even marked their names on the plants. What’s worse, some of them lacked the sense of safety and smoked in the forest, by which the forest fire was caused. To our delight, in the recent years, great changes have taken place among the tourists who will take away rubbish with them when they leave. What’s more, they care the plants a lot and the smokers don’t smoke in the forest in order not to start fire.
