On March 19, Malala Yousafzai, a 15-year-old Pakistani student and women’s education activist, returned to the classroom for the first time since being violently attacked by a member of the Taliban--a terrorist organization-- on October 9, 2012. Malala was shot on her way home from school in Mingora, Pakistan. A Taliban group took responsibility for the attack, saying the attack should serve as a warning to others. Members of the group follow a strict version of the local religion and believe girls should not go to school. Malala was targeted because she is appealing for girls’ rights to education in Swat Valley, Pakistan.

Malala recovers from the attack at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham, England. After a long period of recovery, Malala is starting as a ninth-year student at Edgbaston High School. It is the oldest independent girl school in Birmingham, England. Though she has no concrete plans to return to Pakistan, Malala still speaks out as a voice for change in her country, and everywhere.

“I am excited that today I have achieved my dream of going back to school. I want all girls in the world to have this basic opportunity,” Malala said in a statement. “I miss my classmates from Pakistan very much but I am looking forward to meeting my teachers and making new friends here in Birmingham.”

Malala has been an Internet blogger, or writer, since she was 11 years old. In 2011 she was awarded Pakistan’s National Peace Award for her bravery in writing about the difficulties of life and education in the shadow of the Taliban. She has spoken publicly about children’s rights and been nominated(提名)for an international children’s peace prize.

After the attack in 2012, support for Malala poured in from around the world. The United Nations declared November 10 Malala Day. Jabbar was one of the best basketball players in history. He was the NBA's most valuable player six times and a 19-time All-Star. When he retired in 1989 he was the NBA’s all-time leading scorer with 38,387 points. That record has still to be broken.

After retirement, Jabbar began scoring in the literary world. He has written seven bestselling books. In his new children’s book What Color is My World?, he shines the spotlight on African-Americans inventors whose achievements often went unnoticed. A reporter recently interviewed him in New York City.

R: The title of your new book is What Color is My World, but the subtitle is The Lost History of African American Inventors. Why do you say it’s a lost history?

K: African-American inventors made some very significant contributions to American life and world culture, but they’re not acknowledged. So I think I should put something in the spotlight.

R: Why did you choose to present this information in the form of a children’s book?

K: I thought kids, especially African-American kids, needed to know this information. They should get this information at an early age so that they can have an idea of what’s possible. So many kids are told that sports and entertainment are the fields that they should go into, and everything else is ignored. I wanted to put something out there that gave them a broader picture of what is possible.

R: How did you combine facts with a good story? How did you decide on which inventors to include?

K: The inventors I chose all made significant contributions to American life. So, everybody likes ice cream, but nobody knows about the guy who invented the ice-cream scoop(勺子). Everybody likes potato chips, but nobody really knows that a black cook invented potato chips. Things like that get through to people because these are things that are a part of their everyday life. Once they see black people were involved in inventing it, it changes things.

61. The underlined phrase “shines the spotlight on” in the second paragraph can be replaced by“______”.

A. directs people’s attention to       B. is very interested in

C. thinks highly of                D. appeals to people not to disturb

62. Why did Jabbar write the book What Color is My World?

A. To provide an instructive literary book for parents.

B. To make people recognize the contributions African-Americans made.

C. To show he also has literary talent besides the talent in basketball.

D. To raise money for poor African-American kids.

63. What did Jabbar intend to tell Afican-American kids in his book?

A. Information about their early age.

B. Fields they shouldn’t go into.

C. Things than can be ignored.

D. Ideas of what is possible.

64. According to Jabbar’s words in the last paragraph, ______.

A. not everybody likes ice cream and potato chips

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

It is often said that you cannot “teach an old dog new tricks”, but three New Zealand dogs have decided to prove otherwise by learning a skill --- driving a car!

What's even more impressive is that the three who have become skilled in just eight weeks are not special dogs that belong to some rich owners, but abandoned ones at New Zealand's SPCA.

To get their training started, 10-month old Porter, 18-month-old Monty and one-year-old Ginny were selected from a pool of seven potential candidates and moved to Animal Q, a talent agency that teaches animals tricks for movies and television shows.

The driving classes began with teaching the dogs some basic driving techniques like turning the steering wheels(方向盘)and applying the brakes. After that the dogs practiced everything they had learnt behind the wheels of a motorized(装上发动机的)car. Then finally, it was time for the big test--- driving a real car!

Human cars are not really built for four-legged animals, so the car they drove was adjusted so that the dogs could sit comfortably and easily reach the steering wheel with their paws.

Though they all seemed to do very well, the real test came on Monday night when Monty, the best driver of the three, showed his great driving skill on live television.

Why would the SPCA go through so much trouble to highlight the skills of homeless dogs?  The reason is to show that adopting a dog from a shelter does not mean owners are getting a pet that is worse than one purchased from a keeper. The CEO of the SPCA is hoping that this unusual event will be enough to convince the residents of New Zealand to consider them, when searching for a pet.

We surely hope so, meanwhile we are almost certain that these three pioneers have at least landed their names in the Guinness World Records, creating a category that probably does not even exist today!

65. Who do the three dogs belong to?

A. Some rich owners.      B. Animal Q.    C. A shelter.    D. A zoo.

66 .How long do the driving classes last?

A. About two months.                                          B. About ten months.

A. because is was too big for the dogs to drive

B. because it had no steering wheels and brakes

C. to ensure the dogs could sit comfortably and drive easily

D. to motorize the car and turn it to be a real one

68. Which is the right order of the following events?

a. Teaching the dogs some basic driving techniques.

b. Selecting three dogs and moving them to Animal Q.

c. The dogs practiced everything they had learnt in a motorized car.

d. Choosing the best driver to show his great driving skill on live television.

e. Driving a real car.

A. a-b-c- d-e    B. b-a-c-e-d    C.  b- d- a-c-e     D. a- e- c-b-d

69. Why does the SPCA decide to teach the three dogs to learn to drive a car?

A. To prove old dogs can learn new tricks.

B. To teach them performing tricks for movies and television shows.

C. To provide amusing performances for homeless children

D. To encourage people to adopt the abandoned dogs.

70. What can we learn from the passage?

A. A new Guinness category for driving dogs will probably be created.

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

Maps of the world's population show that the majority of people today live near water. We live along coastlines, around bays, up the course of rivers and streams and on islands. We also vacation at the beach and find comfort fishing on a lake. Nothing makes small children happier than the chance of playing in water.

More surprisingly, this human favor for water makes evolutionary(进化的)sense. Sure, we need drinking water to live, but we have also benefited from what's swimming under the waves.

Neuroscientist Crawford of the University of North London has proposed that our ancient ancestors attached to the sea, and that their devotion paid off by allowing the human species to develop large and complex brains.

Crawford claims that when humans separated from apes(类人猿)and appeared in the forests of Africa, they stuck close to rivers and beaches and started catching fish, clams and crabs. That seafood was packed with omega-3 fatty acids, essential fatty acids that promote brain cell growth.

It's no coincidence, Crawford claims, that human brain growth began to increase rapidly once we left the woods and headed for the beach.

Scientists have also discovered that people who eat fish regularly are less likely to suffer from depression than those who eat less seafood. Biochemist Hibbelin of the National Institutes of Health has shown that across cultures there is a direct link between amount of fish eaten each week and rates of depression. More interestingly, Hibbelin and researcher Laura have found that fish is commonly used as a symbol of happiness and good health in various religions and cultures.

We know that fish and the sea are good for us, and so we seek them out. We vacation on the coast and see the waves come and go, feeling happiness has taken over our brain. When we move inland, or go home from vacation, we lose touch with our sea roots and feel unhappy.

71. To explain human’s favor for water, the author ______.

A. lists some examples              B. compares some facts

C. analyzes some numbers            D. raises some questions

72. Human beings have benefited a lot from seafood because ________.

A. seafood has enough water and is fresh

A. went to the coast to spend our holidays

B. left the woods and headed for the beach

C. separated from apes and appeared in the forests of Africa

D. discovered seafood was packed with omega-3 fatty acids

74. What’s the main idea of Paragraph 6?

A. Scientists help people overcome depression.

B. Fish is a kind of symbol in some religions.

C. Eating fish regularly may reduce our depression.

D. Happiness is linked with good health.

75. What can we infer from the passage?

A. It’s good to our health to swim under the waves.

阅读下面短文并回答问题(请注意题目后面的词数要求)。

[1] I never considered myself an environmentalist.

[2] To me, an environmentalist was a guy in a raft to save the whales as he drifted in the Pacific. But in 2001, that changed when I randomly read an article in a Time magazine about global warming, picturing potentially terrible consequences within the century. As a mother of four, __________ —— this century is my children’s lifetime. I was suddenly inspired and determined to take action to fight global warming. I spent the next five years joining environmental groups, attending conferences, meeting with scientists and attending the political debates.

[3] I was interested in the question of how to attract the public’s attention on a subject as complex as global warming. One night, in a casual discussion with friends, we came up with an idea, which was to put sculptures on the sidewalk, each giving a solution to global warming, forcing people to face the issue, but in a non-threatening manner.

[4] As a participant at the 2006 Clinton Global Initiative, I committed to call on more people to take part. Before long we established the non-profit organization, Cool Globes, aiming to use the medium of public art to raise awareness of global warming.

[5] Later, the Chicago Cool Globes exhibit was hugely successful. Millions of people experienced Cool Globes and the exhibit inspired more online individuals and more cities across the country and around the world to apply the project and adopt solutions to global warming in their daily life.

[6] Cool Globes has been an exciting project from day one. I’m proud of all the hard work by so many who have made this possible. I do believe it will make a difference in fighting global warming.

Dear fellow students,

We are to hold a farewell party for our foreign friends Olson and his fellows. With the end of this term drawing near, they’ll go back home. They bring us a lot of fun and good memories during their stay here, so a farewell party is really necessary. The party will be held at 7:00 p.m. on the evening of May 31st in the lecture hall of our school. Some preparations should be made ahead of time. We are now collecting ideas about the party from teachers and students who are interested in it. We have prepared some programs like singing, dancing, exchanging gifts and so on. But if you have any other good ideas, please let us know.

Those who are to take part can prepare a gift or a performance ahead, and we’ll invite some of you to come onto the stage to communicate with our friends face to face. So do make sure you can speak fluent English!

    All are welcome!
