Please excuse me if I’m a little quiet today. Mark is leaving, and I’m kind of sad. You probably don’t know Mark, but you might know someone like him. He has been the heart and soul of the office for years. He has never been interested in getting praise for the wonderful work he does. He just does his job – very well.
We’re pleased that he is moving on to new, better things. But this doesn’t make it any easier to say goodbye.
Life has a way of throwing curve balls (曲线球) at us. Just when we start to get comfortable with a person, a place or a situation, something comes along to change things. A nice neighbor moves away. Someone in the family graduates. A child finds new love through marriage.
Our ability to deal with change and disruption (打乱) decides to a great degree, our peace, happiness and satisfaction in life.
But how do we do that? Chris the California surfer, once told me that the answer to life’s problems can be summed up in four words: “Go with the flow.”
“It’s like surfing,” Chris explained. “You can’t organize the ocean. Waves just happen. You ride them where they take you, then you paddle back out there and catch the next one. You’re always hoping for the perfect wave where you can get it. But mostly you just take them the way they come.”
I think Chris was saying that life is a series of events — both good and bad. There will always be things over which you have no control. The truly successful person expects the unexpected and is prepared to make adjustments(调整).
Don’t stop trying to make all your dreams come true. But when things come up that aren’t exactly in your plan, work around them — and then move on.
We’re going to miss Mark. But rather than dwell on the sadness of our parting(分别), we’ll focus on our hopes for a brighter future — for him, and for us. We’ll go out and do everything that we can to make that future happen.

56. What does the author mean by saying “Life has a way of throwing curve balls at us” ?
A. Things in life happen for a reason.
B. Life is like a ball game.
C. Life is filled with regrets.
D. Life often gives us surprises.

57. Which of the following is TRUE according to the article?
A. The author cannot understand why so many things are changing.
B. The author’s sadness for Mark’s leaving will last a long time.
C. The author is pleased as well as sad that Mark is leaving.
D. The author thinks it is too easy for us to get used to things.

58. Why does the author quote (引用)Chris’ words?
A. Because Chris’ words show the author’s point.
B. Because Chris is popular and surfing is exciting.
C. Because Chris has experienced a lot in life.
D. Because Chris’ words made people think.

59. Which of the following attitudes does the author probably support?
A. Live in the present.
B. Whatever happens, stick to your dreams.
C. Do not expect too much from life.
D. Be ready to deal with changes.

Holding a cell phone against your ear or storing it in your pocket may be dangerous to your health. This explains a warning that cell phone manufacturers(生产商) include in the small print that is often ignored when a new phone is bought. Apple, for example, doesn’t want iPhones to come closer to you than 1.5 centimeters; Research In Motion, BlackBerry’s manufacturer, suggests 2.5 centimeters.

If health problems come from cell phone use, the possible effects are huge. Voice calls — Americans chat on cell phones 2.26 trillion minutes yearly — earn $109 billion for the wireless carriers.

Devra Davis, an expert who has worked for the University of Pittsburgh, has published a book about cell phone radiation(辐射), “Disconnect.” The book does scientific research and concludes the question is not solved.

Brain cancer is a concern that Ms. Davis examines. Over all, there has not been an increase in its incidence since cell phones arrived. But the average marks an increase in brain cancer in the 20-to-29 age group and a drop for the older population.

“Most cancers have different causes,” she says, but she points to laboratory research that suggests low-energy radiation could damage cells(细胞) that could possibly lead to cancer.

Children are more likely to be damaged by radiation than adults, Ms. Davis and other scientists point out. Radiation that penetrates(渗透)only five centimeters into the brain of an adult will reach much deeper into the brains of children because their skulls are thinner and their brains contain more absorptive fluid. No studies have yet been completed on cell phone radiation and children, she says.

Henry Lai, a research professor at the University of Washington, began laboratory radiation studies in 1980 and found that rats exposed(暴露) to radiation had damaged DNA in their brains.

Ms. Davis suggests using wired headsets or the phone’s speaker. Children should text rather than call, she said, and pregnant women(孕妇) should keep phones away from the abdomen(腹部).

63. According to Ms Davis, brain cancer increases among __________.

   A. children                 B. old people                C. people in their twenties                D. pregnant women

64. Why are children easily affected by radiation?

   A. Because they haven’t grown up.

B. Because they are too young to protect themselves.

   C. Because they use cell phones more often than adults.

   D. Because their skulls are thinner and their brains are easily hurt.

65. What can we conclude from the last paragraph?

   A. Pregnant women should keep cell phones away.

   B. People should use cell phones in the correct way.

   C. Children had better text than make phone calls.

   D. People should wear a wired headset when using a cell phone.

66. What does the passage mainly talk about?

   A. Rats exposed to radiation have damaged DNA in their brains.

   B. Don’t hold your cell phone against your ear.

   C. Be careful when using cell phones.

   D. Low-energy radiation could damage cells that could lead to cancer.

Two young artists named Sue and Joanna shared a studio apartment in the Greenwich Village area of New York, trying to realize their dreams. In November pneumonia(肺炎) killed many people. Unluckily, Joanna fell ill, too. One morning, a doctor examined Joanna and then spoke with Sue in another room. “She has decided that she has no chance. All we can do is give her a strong will to live.”

Holding back her tears, Sue went to Joanna’s room. Joanna lay with her face toward the window, eyes wide open. She was counting something backward. “Twelve,” she said, and a little later “eleven” until “five,” almost together. Sue looked out of the window. What was there to count? There was a wall covered with an old ivy vine growing half way up it. The cold breath of autumn has stricken the leaves from the vine until it was almost bare.

“Five what, dear?” asked Sue.

“Leaves. On the ivy vine. When the last one falls I must go, too.”

“Oh, Don’t be silly.” Said Sue, “You will get better.”

“There goes another one. I want to see the last one fall before it gets dark.”

“Try to sleep.” said Sue. “I must call Mr. Behrman up to be my model for my drawing of an old miner. Don't try to move until I come back.”

Old Behrman was a poor painter who lived in the building. For years he had always been planning to paint a work of art, but had never yet begun it. He earned a little money by serving as a model to artists who could not pay for a professional(职业) model.

Sue found Behrman in his room. In one area was a blank canvas that had been waiting twenty-five years for the first line of paint. Sue told him about Joanna and how she feared that her friend would float away like a leaf.

“What!” Old Behrman was angered at such an idea. “How silly! Just take me to her room.”

Joanna was sleeping when they went in. A cold rain was falling, mixed with snow.

The next morning, Sue awoke after an hour’s sleep. She found Joanna staring at the covered window. “Pull up the shade; I want to see.” Sue obeyed.

“It’s the last leaf,” said Joanna. “It will fall today, and I will go with it.”

When night came, the rain began to fall again with a strong wind.

The next morning, Joanna demanded that the window shade be raised. The ivy leaf was still there. Joanna lay for a long time, looking at it. And then she called Sue, “I have been a bad girl. I’m so wrong. Now I want to get well and paint again.”

The doctor came to see Joanna in the afternoon. He told Sue “Joanna is improving. Now I must see Behrman. Pneumonia, too, very ill. Little hope for him.”

Later that day, Sue came to Joanna, and put one arm around her.

“Mr. Behrman died of pneumonia in the hospital today. He was sick only two days. When someone went into his room, Behrman was lying there with his shoes on. His shoes and clothes were all wet. Nobody knew why.”

“Oh, poor Behrman!” Cried Joanna.

“See the last leaf on the wall,” said Sue, “ It looks like a real leaf, doesn’t it? ”

“A real leaf ? ”

“Ah, darling, it is Behrman's masterpiece(杰作) — he painted it there the night when the last leaf fell.”

67. Which is the correct order of events of the story?

① Joanna counted the leaves waiting for her death.

② The doctor advised Sue to do something for Joanna.

③ Joanna came down with pneumonia and stayed in bed.

④ Sue told Joanna what really happened to Old Behrman.

⑤ Joanna gave up the idea of dying and decided to get well.

⑥ Old Behrman decided to do something to help Joanna.

A. ③①②⑥④⑤    B. ③①⑥②⑤④     C. ③②⑥①④⑤    D. ③②①⑥⑤④

68. Which words can best describe Old Behrman?

   A. Cold and mean.                                             B. Poor but noble.

   C. Talented and successful.                          D. Devoted but selfish.

69. Why did Sue call the painting the masterpiece of Old Behrman?

   A. Because Old Behrman promised that he would paint a work of art.

   B. Because Sue was so ashamed of her own poor performance in art.

   C. Because it was so perfect and saved Joann’s life in the end.

   D. Because few painters could compare with Old Behrman in talent.

70. What is the most suitable title of the passage?

   A. The Last Leaf                                   B. A Poor Painter’s Dream

   C. To Live or Not to Live                            D. A Faithful Friend

Should schools pay students to come to class?

Friday is payday for students at one charter high school in Cincinniti. Dohn Community High School recently began rewarding students who had perfect attendance(出勤) and good behavior with cold, hard cash. At the end of each week, seniors who have shown up on time all five days and stayed out of trouble receive $25, while younger students who have done the same receive $ 10.

People who support the program and others who like it say the rewards motivate many kids to come to class when they would otherwise stay home. Those who oppose such programs say that paying kids sends the wrong message. They say students should come to class because they want to learn, not because they want to earn money.

Students’ reporters Joseph Maneen and Peter Brosnan hold different opinions.

              YES.

I believe offering money to high school students for attendance is a good idea. Teens can use that money to help themselves later on in life, whether for college, an apartment, or a rainy day.

Studies have shown that rewards can motivate students to attend school and that the more kids are in school, the more they learn. Chloe Hughes, a 15 years old high school student from Bradford, Mass., agrees. “The money at the end of the week inspires students to try hard in school and get better grades,” she says. “By making money at school, it gets rid of the factor of getting a separate job, so they can focus on their studies.” Receiving the money will make many teens want to come to school, rather than be on the street getting into trouble.

              NO.

Think about what motivates you go to school every day. Your list might include learning new information or spending time with your friends. Should getting paid be included on that list? Of course not!

Learning to be self-motivated is an important life skill. “Students should want to come to school and have a desire to learn, not to make money,” Leigh Kouril, an eighth grader from N.Y. explains. “Students should realize that doing well in school now could help them to earn a good living in the future.”

In addition, students might be less likely to pay attention in class if they think they are being paid just to attend.

Finally, paying students to attend class sends the wrong message. Students may think that basic tasks deserve tangible (有形的) rewards. Intangible rewards, such as gaining self-confidence, are worth much more than money. Anna Kouril, another eighth grader from Yorktown Heights, says, “What students put into their education is what they will get out of it.”

With the discussion about whether English should be cancelled from the national entrance examinations, our class had a debate about the importance of learning English.

60% of the students think English is always of great importance, for it is a most useful means of communication. It functions as a bridge of international communication, helping China to develop fast. What’s more, it plays an important role in our life as well. If you have a good command of English, it is more likely that you will land a better job.

However, 40% of the students argue that English is not that important. Firstly, English is of little use in our daily life. People should attach more importance to their native language learning instead. Besides, China is becoming so powerful that a growing number of foreigners are learning Chinese.

As far as I’m concerned, English should not be cancelled from the national entrance examinations. There is no denying that English learning can’t be ignored. However, the importance of English shouldn’t be overstressed. As students, first of all, we are expected to master our mother tongue.
