My youngest eagerly entered kindergarten, while my oldest excitedly startede college and I felt left behind. After being very happy as a stay-at-home mother of six children,I suddenly felt disappointed on a dead-end road and surrounded by a lack of direction,An inner anxiety troubled me that life was passing by.The road, requiting expensive education, appeared too long and difficult.

Thanks to supportive friends and family, I eventually discovered the road sign pointing to the ideal program at an excellent college, which offered a lot of tuition grants( 学费资助 ). With  anxiety and fear, I went to the college at age forty. Driving to my first master's class, I was as eager and nervous as children for the first day of school.

School required sacrifices: weekends for class, sleep for study, and life's extra money for tuition payments. Yet, as with all good things, the rewards greatly outweighed the cost. The narrow, rocky road developed will power and patience, while the smooth, open road built low confidence. Along the way, I met companions of all ages and interests: a 50-year-old woman who took part in photography classes at the college; a 62-year-old successful businessman who worked toward a nursing degree to serve in developing countries; an 80-year-old woman who enthusiastically started classes to use the Internet, so she could keep up with the world

This past May, twelve years after starting the journey as a non-traditional student, I graduated with a  doctoral degree in literature one week before our youngest child graduated from college. All six children have been especially proud, lovingly calling me " Dr. Mom". Never could I have imagined the wild rush and great travel of this ride back to school. When you hear the small, still voice urging you to do something more or different, remember you can trust your heart.

An average 30-year-old person who has eaten three meals a day since birth has eaten more than 30,000 meals to date. Even if you've only eaten half that much you have to admit this : you've let some of that breakfast, lunch or dinner go to waste. And it turns out we're all to blame for this shaming fact: 30% of all food produced in the world each year is wasted or lost. That's about 1.3 billion tons, according to a new report by the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization.

That's the weight of more than 8.6 million full-grown blue whales, the largest creatures on earth. That's the weight of more than 2.3 million Airbus A380s, the largest planes in existence. That's as if each person in China, the world's most populous country with more than 1.3 billion people, had one ton mass of food they could just throw into the dustbin. It's almost unfathomable, isn't it?

Setting aside that big number, we find the people with the most money are the ones who waste the most. Per capita( 人均 ), European and North American countries waste between 95 and 115 kilograms of food. Sub-Saharan African, South Asian and Southeast Asian countries waste much, much less -- between 6 and 11 kilograms per person.

Here's another statistic: all the food that the world's richest countries waste is about equal to all the food that sub-Saharan Africa produces. The numbers: 222 million tons and 230 million tons, respectively( 分别地). Basically, the wasted food of the rich could feed much of the African continent. And these numbers come as we've just been reporting about rising food prices around the world in the past week.

And my own personal tip: if I eat at a restaurant and can't finish it all, I ask for a doggie bag. I used to be a waiter years ago and will never forget the amounts of food I saw left on the table after the bill was paid. There's no reason to waste food. It's up to all of us to use our common sense to eat and shop just a bit more wisely.

31. According to the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization, how much food do people produce each year in the world?

    A. About 3.3 billion tons.                     B. About 3.9 billion tons.

    C. About 4.3 billion tons.                     D. About 5.6 billion tons.

32. What does the underlined word "unfathomable" in Paragraph 2 mean?

    A. Possible to imagine.                        B. Impossible to change.

    C. Impossible to understand.                    D. Possible to understand.

33. It can be learned that the food the rich waste can support________.

    A. half the people in Europe                    B. most people of America

    C. most people of Asia                         D. most people of Africa

34. The author gave his personal tip based on the fact that _________

    A. he was once very poor                        B. he was once a farmer

    C. he once worked in a restaurant                 D. the price of food is very high

35. What is the purpose of this article?

    A. To show the author's opinion of food.

    B. To let us live more wisely and not waste food.

    C. To show the amount of wasted food a year.

    D. To ask the richest countries to help African people.

A study in Norway has found that students who stayed in school longer than others their same age scored higher on intelligence tests.

In the middle of the nineteen fifties, the government began requiring students to attend school until the age of sixteen instead of fourteen. Communities had almost twenty years to make the change. So some students went to school for seven years while others went for at least nine years.

This difference gave researchers the chance to see if the additional schooling had any effect on intellectual development.

All young men in Norway must take a test of their cognitive ability at age  nineteen in preparation for required military service. This is commonly called an IQ,or intelligence quotient, test.

The researchers compared the test results of one hundred and seven thousand young men to  their years of school, Taryn Ann Galloway is a researcher at the University of Oslo.

"The young men who were basically forced to stay in school for two years longer actually did have higher IQs. So, based on that, we were able to say that increasing compulsory schooling did actually have an effect on their cognitive abilities as measured at nineteen years of age. " Taryn Ann Galloway says.

The average IQ is one hundred. Most people score between eighty-five and one hundred fifteen.

Ms. Galloway says students who attended school for nine years scored seven points higher than those who attended for seven years. Those who went for eight years scored about four points higher.

Taryn Ann Galloway says, "So that's still quite large. "

The findings appear in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Another recent study, in the journal Nature, found that IQ scores can rise or fall during the teenage years. In two thousand four, researchers from University College London tested thirty-three young people aged twelve to sixteen. They repeated the tests four years later. They found increases or decreases of as much as twenty points.

Professor Cathy Price says the differences in performance could be the result of some teens being early or late developers. But she says it is equally possible that education played a part. She sees a lesson for educators : "We have to be careful not to write off poorer performers at an early stage when in fact their IQ may improve significantly given a few more years. "

36. According to the passage, in Norway __________

    A. teens stay at school longer than those in other countries

    B. students usually begin school at 7

    C. the public must carry out the requirement at once

    D. the government did a lot of things to improve students' IQ

37. Young men in Norway must take an IQ test at 19 _______

    A. to help researchers do a study on intellectual development

    B. to see whether their IQ scores rise or fall

    C. to prepare for the required military service

    D. to be allowed to graduate from the school

38. How did the researchers do their study?

    A. By comparison.                                B. By asking questions.

    C. By giving examples.                            D. By discussion.

39. From what Cathy Price says, we can know that ________

    A. it is important to start educating earlier

    B. we shouldn't jump to conclusions about teens' performance

    C. the IQ will be improved as one ages

    D. educators must try to improve teens' IQ

40. What is the best title of the passage?

    A. Education quality is determined by studying time

    B. The IQ is developing faster as one is getting older

    C. Beginning school late does harm to students

    D. More school may mean higher IQ

You could fill the sky with all the ideas people have had for flying cars, or what Carl Dietrich calls"flying-driving vehicles". Carl Dietrich said, "Since the turn of the 20th century, there have been hundreds of published concepts for flying-driving vehicles. And some of them have actually been built and flown. But at this point the Transition is the closest to actually getting to the marketplace. "

Carl Dietrich heads a company in Massachusetts called Terrafugia. He said, "Terrafugia is developing  the Transition street-legal airplane, which many people have characterized as the first practical flying car. "

Carl Dietrich says the Transition Roadable Aircraft easily changes to a car. He said, " It takes about twenty seconds. It' s like puffing the top down on a convertible(敞篷车 ) ; only instead of folding up your roof, we're folding up our wings and we're transferring power from a propeller ( 螺旋桨 ) to the wheels for driving on the ground. "

Development began in 2006, and the first road and flight tests took place in 2009. The Transition had to meet federal safety standards for cars and aircrafts. Last year the Federal Aviation Administration agreed to let it weigh more than other light sport aircrafts. But even fully loaded, says Mr. Dietrich, it just weighs about half as much as an average car.

Carl Dietrich says the aircraft can climb to more than three thousand meters. It can carry two people at speeds over one hundred and sixty kilometers an hour in the air. And on the ground it can drive at highway speeds, around one hundred and thirteen kilometers an hour. The plane needs an airport for rake-offs and landings, which can be a problem if the buyer doesn't have a private airport. But it uses automotive gasoline.

The company expects to complete the building process for its flying cars within the next few months. Then it will begin a year-long testing program. Terrafugia expects the Transition to reach the market by the end of 2012, at a price of around two hundred and fifty thousand dollars.

41. According to Carl Dietrich, Terrafugia is trying to ________

 A. develop cars to increase their running speeds  B. publish concepts for flying-driving vehicles

 C. produce practical flying cars               D. prove that cars can fly

42. Paragraph 3 shows that the Transition Roadable Aircraft __________

    A. looks smaller than a normal car

    B. doesn't have a roof like a normal car

    C. will be very difficult to operate at first

    D. can be used both in the sky and on the ground

43. What might be a problem that the Transition Roadable Aircraft will face?

    A. It can only carry the driver.

    B. There will not be proper gasoline for it.

    C. It will weigh too much to fly in the sky.

    D. There will not be enough places for its take-offs and landings.

44. The last paragraph shows that

    A. flying cars will not be in wide use

    B. flying cars will be put into use quite soon

    C. the future market of the flying cars is not bright

    D. flying cars will still be a dream for a long time

45. What's the main idea of this passage?

Last week in our class, a heated discussion was held about whether the students should be allowed to discuss their questions in the self-study class. 60 percent of the students expressed the opinion that they would like to make use of the self-study class to sort out what they have learned recently, so they are in great need of quiet surroundings. However, 30 percent of the students objected to the view, whose reason is,that free discussion can help them solve many problems they can't deal with by themselves. To our great astonishment, others had no definite attitudes. Personally speaking, in order to keep order in class, students had better not discuss their questions in the self-study class.

The Power of Words

Meeting a rude driver on his way home, the writer unconsciously said dirty words. Later at home, he heard his son repeat the dirty words, which made him realize his mistake.

As a matter of fact, parents' words have a great influence on their children. On the one hand, if parents often say politely and medestly, their children must have good manners. On the other hand, parents' rudeness and bad manners will directly be passed on to children.

Thus in our daily life, we should pay much attention to the words which come out of our mouth. Whenever we speak to others, especially on the occasion where children are, we should use as clean and beautiful words as possible. Encouraging and inspiring words are good for everyone.

Language is a gift and should be used to make our world better. Ioving words can help heal a braken heart, encourage a desperate person, and lighten a heavy load.
