A boy was born to a couple after eleven years of marriage. They were a loving couple and the boy was the apple of their eyes. When the boy was around two years old, one morning the husband saw a medicine bottle open. He was late for work so he asked the wife to cap the bottle and keep it in the cupboard. The mother, preoccupied in the kitchen, totally forgot the matter.

The boy saw the bottle and playfully went to the bottle and, fascinated with its color1, drank it all. It happened to be a poisonous medicine meant for adults in small dosages. When the child collapsed, the mother hurried him to the hospital, where he died. The mother was stunned. She was terrified how to face her husband.

When the distraught father came to the hospital and saw the dead child, he looked at his wife and uttered just four words. "I Love You Darling"

The husband's totally unexpected reaction is proactive behavior. The child is dead. He can never be brought back to life. There is no point in finding fault with the mother. Besides, if only he have taken time to keep the bottle away, this will not have happened. No point in attaching blame. She had also lost her only child. What she needed at that moment was consolation and sympathy from the husband. That is what he gave her.

Sometimes we spend time asking who to blame, whether in a relationship, in a job or with the people we know. We miss out some warmth in human relationship in giving each other support. After all, shouldn't forgiving someone we love be the easiest thing in the world to do? Treasure what you have. Don't multiply pain, and suffering by holding on to forgiveness.

If everyone can look at life with this kind of perspective, there would be much fewer problems in the world.

56. Why was the two-year-old boy dead?

       A. He was deadly ill.                                  B. His mother killed him.

C. angry and sad.                                      D. surprised and annoyed.

58. Seeing his dead son, why did the man said “I Love You Darling” to his wife?

       A. Because his wife did the right thing.        B. Because he loved his wife more.

       C. Because he wanted to comfort her.         D. Because he owned his wife an apology.

59. From the second paragraph, we know the boy was very ________.

       A. naughty                    B. lovely                C. careful                     D. curious

60. What is the purpose of the passage?

       A. To persuade readers to forgive people.     B. To tell us a touching love story.

As an experienced photojournalist in Nashville, Tennessee, I was hired by USA Today newspaper to photograph a spinal bifida (脊柱畸形) corrective surgical procedure. It was to be performed on a twenty-one week old fetus(胎儿) in uterus(子宫) at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. At that time, in 1999, twenty-one weeks in uterus was the earliest that the surgical team would consider for surgery. The worst possible outcome would be that the surgery would cause premature delivery, and no child born earlier than twenty-three weeks had survived.

The tension could be felt in the operating room as the surgery began. A typical C-section incision(切口) was made to access the uterus, which was then lifted out and laid at the junction of the mother's thighs. The entire procedure would take place within the uterus, and no part of the child was to breach the surgical opening. During the procedure, the position of the fetus was adjusted by gently manipulating the outside of the uterus. The entire surgical procedure on the child was completed in one hour and thirteen minutes. When it was over, the surgical team breathed a sigh of relief, as did I.

As a doctor asked me what speed of film I was using, out of the corner of my eye I saw the uterus shake, but no one's hands were near it. It was shaking from within. Suddenly, an entire arm thrust out of the opening, then pulled back until just a little hand was showing. The doctor reached over and lifted the hand, which reacted and squeezed the doctor's finger. As if testing for strength, the doctor shook the tiny fist. Samuel held firm. I took the picture! Wow! It happened so fast that the nurse standing next to me asked, "What happened?" "The child reached out," I said. "Oh. They do that all the time," she responded.

The surgical opening to the uterus was closed and the uterus was then put back into the mother and the C-section opening was closed.

It was ten days before I knew if the picture was even in focus. To ensure no digital manipulation of images before they see them, USA Today requires that film be submitted unprocessed. When the photo editor finally phoned me he said, "It's the most incredible picture I've ever seen."

61. In 1999,people believed that it was ________.

       A. possible for a fetus 21 weeks born to survive

       B. likely for a fetus born 21 weeks to become deformed

       C. right time for a fetus born 21 weeks to receive an operation

       D. risky for a fetus 21 weeks in uterus to receive an operation

62. From the second paragraph, we can see that the surgery was ______.

       A. challenging but successful                      B. demanding and unsuccessful

       C. simple and short                                    D. long-lasting and difficult

63. The underlined “It” in paragraph 3 refers to ________.

       A. the shaking of the uterus                        B. the arm of the fetus

       C. the taking of the picture                         D. the head of the fetus

64. What can we learn about the author?

       A. He was an experienced interviewer.         B. He was a wonderful picture editor.

C. He was an excellent picture journalist.     D. He was a very famous child doctor.

After lots of hype, the new iPhone 3GS has arrived, boasting an improved camera, better battery life, and speedier performance. But is it a must?

The iPhone 3GS is available in two versions: 16GB and 32GB. The 16GB version costs $199, while the 32GB version costs $299. From the outside, the iPhone 3GS looks exactly like the iPhone 3G. Like the iPhone 3G, the new model comes in black and white versions, and sports a 3.5-inch touch screen. Most of the changes to the iPhone 3GS have been made on the inside. Apple says that battery life is better, but the biggest boost is in the iPhone's speed: The iPhone 3GS runs twice as fast as the iPhone 3G. Instead of a lot of software installed on it, the iPhone 3GS comes with the most recent version of the iPhone Software -- version 3.0 – installed, but it does come with easy access to Apple's App Store. The speedier performance of the iPhone 3GS extends to surfing the Web, too. You can see entire Web pages, and can zoom in and out with ease.

The notable new messaging feature on the iPhone 3GS is support for MMS. You can send pictures and videos by SMS, rather than having to send them via e-mail. Other new and very-handy e-mail features include the ability to search through your e-mail messages and contacts, as well as the option to use a landscape-oriented keyboard when composing messages.

The camera has been upgraded from 2 megapixels to 3 megapxiels, and adds auto-focus. If you already own an iPhone 3G, the iPhone 3GS may not be worth the additional cost, since you can get many of its cool features for free with the iPhone 3.0 software upgrade. But if you've been using an older iPhone or smart phone, or are new to the smart phone world, the iPhone 3GS will amaze you with its speed and plentiful features.

71. The difference between 3G and 3GS lies mainly in ________.

A. their color1s                            B. their outside shapes

C. their screens                           D. their batteries and speeds

72. What can we infer from the second paragraph about 3G?

       A. It offers an easy access to the web pages.

       B. It has two versions: either black or white.

       C. In spite of slow speed, it functions the same as 3GS.

       D. It has the latest iPhone software installed.

73. What does MMS probably refer to in the passage?

       A. Multi-media Messaging Service.              B. Membership Management System.

       C. Major Messaging Software.                   D. Multi-Media Software Store.

74. According to the text, what is the notable advantage 3GS has in messaging?

       A. Pictures and videos can be sent more quickly.

B. Pictures and videos can be sent through SMS.

C. It’s more convenient to send and receive messages.

D. It’s more convenient to compose messages via keys.

1Secondhand smoke is a byproduct of cigarette, cigar or pipe smoking. Secondhand smoke occurs when tobacco burns or when smokers exhale, and it is inhaled involuntarily by non-smokers.

2Secondhand smoke___________________. The first is called side stream smoke, which is the smoke released from the burning end of a cigarette or cigar, or from tobacco burning in the bowl of a pipe. The second is called mainstream smoke, which is exhaled by a smoker.

3When nonsmokers are exposed to secondhand smoke, they inhale many of the same cancer-causing chemicals that smokers inhale. According to the U.S. Surgeon General, cigarette smoke contains more than 4,000 chemical compounds, including more than 50 cancer-causing chemicals, and at least 250 chemicals that are either toxic or carcinogenic.

4Both side stream and mainstream smoke are dangerous to nonsmokers. Side stream smoke is generated at lower temperatures and under different conditions than mainstream smoke. As a result, it contains higher concentrations of many of the toxins found in cigarette smoke.

5Secondhand smoke has been designated as a known human carcinogen by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the National Toxicology Program, and the International Agency for Research on Cancer. Secondhand smoke also is listed as an occupational carcinogen by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health.

6According to the 2006 report by the U.S. Surgeon General, there is no risk-free level of exposure to secondhand smoke: even small amounts of secondhand smoke exposure can be harmful to people’s health. Separating smokers from nonsmokers, cleaning the air, and ventilating buildings can help. However, they cannot eliminate the exposure of nonsmokers to secondhand smoke.
