In the summer of 1999, a small town called Golcuk was shaken by a big earthquake in north-western Turkey. It destroyed the whole town and other nearby places. Soon enough, help from other countries flew there for one purpose, “saving lives”. Nowadays wherever an earthquake strikes, other countries are ready to send help. That is really something that, as human beings, we should be proud of.

When the earthquake struck, I was living in my hometown of Ankara, capital of the Turkey. Despite the 220-mile distance between the two locations, we still were able to feel the shakes.

I had a chance to visit Golcuk a couple times when I was a kid. My uncle who lives in Germany has a summer house there, and every summer they stay in Golcuk for their yearly vacation. After the quake struck, we couldn’t contact them, so we didn’t know if they were in Golcuk or in Germany during the quake. Our unsuccessful attempts worried us, and the only thing we wanted to hear was that they were OK. Without wasting any more time, my brother, my sister’s husband, and I decided to drive there to check on them by ourselves.

When we were driving, the damage of the earthquake started to show itself right away. Big, wide, tall trees were laid down on the side of the road. Getting closer to Golcuk, we found the impact of the earthquake was getting worse. Inside the town was total destruction.

It wasn’t easy to figure out the streets among the ruins. Finally, we were able to find my uncle’s apartment and thank God, it was still standing, but nobody was there. Later on we found that they hadn’t yet visited Golcuk that year. What luck!

Earthquakes are natural disasters and there is no way to avoid them, especially as earthquakes never give a warning in advance. They just strike mercilessly in the middle of the night when people are asleep in their beds. We cannot stop disasters but we can prepare ourselves for their consequences.

56. What is the best title of the passage?

A. Memory of an Earthquake in Golcuk      B. My Uncle’s Yearly Vacation in Golck

C. An Unforgettable Experience            D. Our Unsuccessful Attempts

57. Mentioning “Our unsuccessful attempts” in the third paragraph, the author may NOT refer to __________.

A. calling his uncle directly          B. ringing his uncle’s family members

C. contacting his uncle’s neighbors    D. going to Germany

58. On their way to search for their uncle, they found __________.

A. their uncle spent their yearly vacation in Golcuk every year

B. it was not difficult to find their uncle’s house

C. the damage of the earthquake was worse than expected

D. their uncle hadn’t visited Golcuk that year

59. From this passage, we can learn that __________.

A. help from other countries will come to the quake-hit country

B. people know how to get rid of earthquakes

C. they went to Golcuk immediately the quake happened

D. the author has never seen his uncle before

Tomatoes are necessary in every kitchen, but hardly will you hear their cosmetic function. Not only do tomatoes taste great, but they also keep the skin healthy. It is good to consume tomatoes as they have lycopene (茄红素), which is an antioxidant(抗氧化剂)and hence works as a sunscreen from within. These antioxidants make the tomato an anti-aging product as they help fight the damage and reddening of the skin. It is recommended to have at least 16 milligrams of lycopene per day. For people who are used to sitting in air-conditioned places, tomato helps moisturize their skin. In a word, whether you want to cure large pores(毛孔) and sun-burns or reduce acne(痤疮), tomatoes are beneficial.

Cure big pores

Big pores provide easy access to dirt, thus increasing the chances of infecting the pore. Take a tablespoon of fresh tomato juice, and mix it with two to four drops of fresh lime juice. Use a cotton ball to put this mixture on your face for about 15 minutes and then wash it off with cool water. Regular application will reduce pores greatly.

Reduce acne

Tomatoes can help reduce and clear up your acne. Vitamin A and vitamin C are commonly found in a lot of acne medicines. Tomatoes are rich in vitamin A, vitamin C and vitamin K. If you have mild acne, cut a tomato in half and leave it on your face for an hour, which will moisturize your face. Do this as many times as you can, and your acne will dry off soon.

Cool the skin

A lot of people’s skin gets sun-burnt in summer because of staying in the sun for a long time. Crush(压碎) half a tomato and mix it with two table-spoons of plain yogurt. Apply this mixture on face, neck, hands and feet for 20 minutes, and then wash it. Tomato cools the skin, while yogurt can make it soft and supple.

60. From the first paragraph, we can learn __________.

A. without tomatoes, our skin cannot stay healthy

B. tomatoes are products fighting against aging

C. an antioxidant serves as a sunscreen

D. only by eating tomatoes every day can we keep healthy

61. The purpose of this passage is to __________.

A. recommend that we should have 16 milligrams of lycopene

B. tell people how important it is to keep our skin healthy

C. remind people of the importance of tomatoes

D. analyze why tomatoes taste so great

62. What is right about cooling the skin if the skin gets sun-burnt?

A. A mixture of tomato and yogurt is needed.

B. Tomato is likely to make sure of your soft skin.

C. Yogurt is used to make sure your skin is cool.

D. You should keep the mixture on your skin for a long time.

In the dining room of my grandfather’s house stood a massive grandfather clock. Meals in that dining room were a time for four generations to become one. The table was always spread with food containing love as the main ingredient(成分). And that grandfather clock stood like an old family friend, watching over the laughter that was a part of our lives.

As a child, the old clock fascinated me. I watched and listened to it during meals. Even more wonderful to me was my grandfather’s ritual. He wound(上发条) that clock with a special key carefully each day. That key was magic to me. It kept our family’s magnificent clock ticking and chiming. I remember watching as my grandfather took the key from his pocket and opened the hidden door in the clock. He inserted the key and wound — not too much, nor too little. He never let that clock wind down and stop. He showed us grandchildren how to open the door and let us each take turns winding the key. I remember the first time I did it I was so excited to be part of this family ritual.

After my grandfather died, it was days after the funeral before I remembered the clock! “Mama! The clock! We’ve let it wind down.” The tears flowed freely when I entered the dining room. The clock stood there quiet. It even seemed smaller without my grandfather’s special touch.

Some time later, my grandmother gave me the clock and the key. The old house was quiet. No laughter over the dinner table, no ticking or chiming of the clock — all was still. I took the key in my shaking hand and opened the clock door. All of a sudden, I was a child again, watching my grandfather with his silver-white hair and blue eyes. He was there, winking at me, at the secret of the clock’s magic, at the key that held so much power.

I stood, lost in the moment for a long time. Then slowly and carefully I inserted the key and wound the clock. I sprang to life. Tick — Tock, tick — tock, life and chimes were breathed into the dining room, into the house and into my heart. In the movement of the hands of the clock, my grandfather lived again.

63. The best title for the passage can be __________.

A. My Grandfather  B. My Family  C. Grandfather’s Clock  D. The Dining Room

64. The tears flowed freely when the writer entered the dining room because __________.

A. the clock was too small           B. the clock stood there quiet

C. Grandfather didn’t wind the clock   D. the writer missed Grandfather

65. From the fourth paragraph we can infer that __________.

A. the clock stopped after the writer’s grandfather died

B. there was something wrong with the clock

C. the writer’s hand shook

D. Grandfather was alive again

66. Which of the following sentences is RIGHT according to the passage?

A. Grandfather wound the clock — the more, the better.

B. The clock wasn’t wound for several days after Grandfather died.

C. The clock was wrong after Grandfather died.

D. Grandmother didn’t like the clock.

Nowadays, a cell phone service is available to everyone, everywhere. Probably thousands of people have already been using it, but I just discovered it, so I’m going to claim it and also name it: Fake Foning.

The technology has been working well for me at the office, but there are unlimited applications, actually in any public space.

Say you work at a big university with lots of talky workmates buzzing about. Now, say you need to use the restroom. The trip down the hall will take approximately one hour, because a person can't walk into those talky people without getting pulled aside for a question, a bit of gossip, a new read on a certain line of Paradise Lost.

So just pick a cell phone up. Don’t dial. Just hold that phone to your face and start talking. Walk confidently down the hall engaged in fake conversation, making sure to tailor both the topic and content to the person standing before you whom you are trying to avoid.

For standard colleague avoidance, I suggest fake chatting about fake business:

“Yes, I'm glad you called, because we really need to hammer out the details. What’s that? Yes, I read Page 12, but if you look at the bottom of 4, I think you can see the problem begins right there.”

Be engaged in your fake fone conversation. Make eye contact with the people passing, nod to them, gesture keen interest in talking to them at a later time, point to your phone, shrug and move on.

There was one important caution about fake foning. The other day I was fake foning my way past a colleague, and he was actually following me to get my attention. I knew he wanted to ask about a project I had not yet finished. I was trying to buy myself some time, so I continued fake foning with my doctor. “So I don't need the operation? Oh, doctor, that is the best news.”

And then: Brrrrrrng! Brrrrrmg! Brrrrrmg! My phone started ringing, right there while it was planted on my face. My colleague looked at me, and I looked at him, and naturally I gasped. “What is the matter?” I said, pulling the phone away to look at it, and then putting it back to my ear.

“Hello? Are you still there?” Oops.

67. According to the passage Fake Foning is _______________________.

A. a strategy to avoid people       B. a device newly produced

C. a service provided everywhere    D. a skill of communication

68. What does the last example show?

A. One effective way is to fake fone one’s doctor. B. One has to be careful while fake foning.

C. Fake foning may not cheat people.         D. Fake foning is always quite successful.

69. After his phone suddenly began ringing, the author___________________.

A. immediately started talking to the caller    B. immediately started talking to his colleague

C. put the phone away and stopped talking    D. continued with his fake conversation

70. What is the tone of the passage?

A. Critical.    B. Humorous.   C. Serious.   D. Unclear.
